Hi I'm Dick

I'm a Mormon. I am retired, and enjoying life as the happy Grampa of 33 terrific grandkids.

About Me

I am a 75-year-old retired commercial printing company owner. We have 8 married children who have given us 33 "perfect" grandkids, ages 2 to 22, who live in Utah, Nevada, Arizona, and Illinois. We currently have 3 grandchildren serving full-time missions for the Church in Texas, Alabama, and Australia. I enjoy reading, music, home improvement projects, and of course playing with the kids. Our Family loves a cappella singing, and my very favorite is old-time barbershop quartet music, although I am more of a listener than a singer nowdays. My wife and I recently served a full-time volunteer mission for our Church helping people improve their job-seeking skills in the New England area in Northeastern United States. I attend "Silver Sneakers" exercise classes for old folk, and would like to lose about 25 pounds.

Why I am a Mormon

I grew up as a church-going Presbyterian in Pennsylvania. Religion was pretty much just a Sunday thing for our Family, and I never gave much thought to the deeper questions of the Gospel. After graduation from college, while serving in the US Air Force, I met and married a less-active Mormon girl. At first I tried to make a Presbyterian out of her, but soon had an opportunity to learn about her Mormon religion. After several months of prayer and reading the Book of Mormon, the light finally came on, and I realized that the Book of Mormon is the true Word of God, and therefore Joseph Smith must be a true prophet, and this must be the true Church. That was some 45 years ago, and since that time I have had many experiences that reinforce my conviction that Jesus is the Christ, and that this is His only completely true Church on the earth today. Of that I am sure.

How I live my faith

Since I joined the Church some 45 years ago, I have had many opportunities to serve in Church callings, including several years as Bishop of my Ward, and many other roles. I currently serve as a Sunday School Teacher for an adult class. This year we are studying the New Testament, and next year it will be the Book of Mormon. I spent several years as a Scoutmaster and many years in other roles for the Boy Scouts of America. With 7 sons, that was bound to happen. Recently my wife and I served an 18-month senior mission in Boston, Massachusetts, administering the Church Employment Resource Services program in the New England area. In addition to my Church callings, I have done a lot of volunteer work reading for the blind, helping to make wooden toy cars for underprivileged kids, serving on the City Planning Commission, and the like. I also try as best I can to respond to the needs of my neighbors and others as the opportunities arise. I often think that I am not doing enough, considering the overwhelming blessings I have received from the Lord.
