Hi I'm Derrick

I'm from the Phoenix-area. I'm a broadcaster and an educator. I'm a Mormon.

About Me

I'm a History instructor at community colleges. Before making that switch I was a high school teacher and baseball coach. Education is a day-job that allows me to pursue my first professional love. That is on the radio. I do some sportscasting and cover women's college basketball. At the risk of sounding over-the-top and corny, those endeavors force me to spend a lot of time away from my favorite job, that of raising my two boys. It was something that I never expected to happen to me, but as my sons grow older I can sense sports' importance diminishing as my family's spiritual and intellectual development becomes my primary focus.

Why I am a Mormon

I was born into the gospel, but that is far from the reason I have remained. Simply put, I choose to be a Mormon because the Holy Ghost insists upon it. I have read the Book of Mormon many times and have prayed of its truthfulness and the Holy Spirit has repeated that it is indeed God's word as is the Bible and the two have provided a clearer understanding of Jesus Christ's role as Savior of mankind. Likewise, as I have considered Joseph Smith and the modern-day prophets up to, and including President Monson, the Spirit arrives and testifies that they have been the Lord's servants through a churning within my chest. Knowing that God cares for all of us on the earth to the degree of insuring that we have His spokesman and a direct contact to His will has provided me with such great comfort recently as current economic and diplomatic events become more harrowing by the day. It is a source of great comfort knowing that the Almighty is in control, and that we can understanding of His will through revelation to His prophets. While prophets and revelation have provided immediate comfort, the eternal aspect provides my family and me incredible direction throughout this life. My children have provided me with the greatest blessings. Not just from the joy of their love and companionship, but in how they have inspired me to work to be a better man. Understanding that our familial relationships need not end at death is the happiest thought I can consider. It further demonstrates the love that our Heavenly Father has for all of us. He wants us to continue in the joy that we have throughout our earthly-existence. And through scriptures, the Spirit and prophets, he has provided for us the tools to receive such benefits

How I live my faith

My professional experience has led to many opportunities to serve in the gospel. Most recently I was one of two Sunday School teachers that prepared lessons for the more experienced members of the Church. Most of my work in the church has been in the educational side of service. I have taught classes for every age between 11 to the very old. In each experience I have marveled at how I am generally the most consistent recipient of knowledge as preparing and delivering the lessons provides me with greater understanding.
