Hi I'm Chris Swanson

I grew up in Columbus, GA and currently work as a high school economics teacher in Newnan, GA. I'm a Mormon.

About Me

I work full time teaching high school economics. At the same time I'm enrolled in graduate school working on advanced degrees in finance. Those endeavors keep me plenty busy but I always make time for exercise, reading, and gardening. My wife and I live in a quiet neighborhood on a lot big enough for me to indulge my gardening habit and rural enough for me to see all the stars at night.

Why I am a Mormon

I was born into a family that was religion-neutral but my dad joined the church and he and my mom became active before I was old enough to know anything else. So I've always been a member but, like most members, gained my own conviction of the church later in life. I choose to be a member because no other belief system can give me the peace of mind, contentment, and happiness this one brings. I honestly believe that everything good that I have done or every worthwhile character trait I've developed is the direct result of my belonging to this church.

How I live my faith

This is certainly a church of workers and I've worked in a variety of callings throughout my life. All of those callings have kept me from being a passive participant and helped me internalize and actively engage with my religion. I'm sure most active Mormons would agree. I've taught classes, worked with church finances, worked in administrative callings, handled church social activities, and worked with youth. Each experience taught me things and enabled me to contribute to a great cause in a variety of ways. My favorite experiences have always been those involving service to our community. My experiences have ranged from taking part in large-scale disaster relief efforts and helping habitat for humanity to smaller things like removing trees from widows' yards and painting houses for people who couldn't afford to do it themselves. In addition to the more external activities such as service and work assignments, my faith has also given me internal strength through personal reading of the scriptures and moments of personal prayer. I feel like the gospel really works on my whole character and I know that I'm am far better a person than I ever could have been without it.
