Hi I'm Sami

I'm a college student, competitive swimmer, traveler, and missionary serving in Bakersfield, California. And I'm a Mormon.

About Me

I am a college student studying civil engineering. I go to school at the base of the Wasatch mountains, but my real love is the Midwestern sky. My home state is Nebraska. I love to be active! My favorite sport is swimming. Not only am I a competitive swimmer, but teach kids how to do it too! I started my own swim lesson business and I have taught over a hundred children. I have five brothers--definitely a full house, but I love them to pieces. I'm currently serving as a missionary for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Bakersfield, California.

Why I am a Mormon

I was raised as a Mormon. When I was going through my teenage years, I wondered if the church was true. I always knew there was a God, but I wanted to know for myself if the rest of Mormon doctrine was true. So as the church invites all to do, I asked God myself through prayer. As I prayed for the chance to know for myself, I studied the words of modern-day prophets and read the Book of Mormon. With these actions and my prayers, I came to know it is true. I felt a calmness and a peace whenever I would wonder if it was true and I continue to feel it today. It has made me a better, more happier person. I know with all my heart that it is true, and that God loves us enough to give us all the answers to life's most challenging questions. This is why I'm a Mormon.

How I live my faith

The main way I live my faith is to become more like Jesus Christ. I try to develop his characteristics and attributes, study his words, and follow his example. I love to serve others--I'm always try to look for ways to help those around me. I try to emulate his patience and love for all. As the Bible and Book of Mormon teach us, Christ has invited us to be his disciples. I do my best everyday to live the way He would want me to. I share with others how His love has blessed my life and how it can bless theirs. I also call upon God daily through prayer. I find strength through praying. In the Book of Mormon, it invites us to "counsel with the Lord in all thy doings, and he will direct thee for good." As I counsel with my Heavenly Father, I feel much more guidance in my daily life. I know I'm doing the things He would have me do, and that helps me to be happy.

What is the Book of Mormon?

The Book of Mormon is another witness of Jesus Christ. It's translated from an ancient text written by the people of the Americas. It starts out with a man named Lehi, who lived in Jerusalem around 600 BC. God commanded him to bring his family to the Americas to escape the destruction of Jerusalem. They developed into a great nation and kept many records. Around 400 AD, a man by the name of Mormon, complied the records into the book we have today. That is why it's called the Book of Mormon.
