Hi I'm Beth

I'm a linguist, swimmer, pianist, wife, and I'm a Mormon.

About Me

I'm Beth! I am a linguistics major at Brigham Young University (BYU) in Provo, Utah, with a double minor in Chinese and German. I love to swim and play the piano. Lately, I like to watercolor when I need to de-stress. Even though I wouldn't say that I'm very good at it, I find it helps me relax and express my thoughts in a different way. I love to learn---I especially love languages. I can speak Spanish, German, and Mandarin Chinese. I served an 18-month church mission in southern Germany and Austria. After I came home, I began learning Mandarin and had the chance to do a semester abroad in China. I am obsessed with the definitions and etymologies of words and will sometimes go on a "word hunt" to understand the meaning of something I'm reading or that comes up in any kind of context (i.e. movies or speeches). I am married to my best friend and love living life with him. We like to go on lots of adventures exploring Utah (especially hikes when it is warm), watch movies, and play games together.

Why I am a Mormon

I have learned for myself that this gospel is true. By living the principles taught in this church, I am so much happier and it brings me closer to my Heavenly Father. I want to become like Him, and I believe that through the gospel of Jesus Christ, I can become like God. I know who to follow and how to do so. One of the things I love is the knowledge I have that God is my Father in Heaven. When I pray, I know that God is there listening---because He cares about me and loves me. He has always given me exactly what I need, and His plan always makes me happy. Seeing God involved in the details of my life brings me comfort and assurance that He is there and that He loves me and has a perfect plan for me.

How I live my faith

I try to live my faith by serving those around me. I love to serve and help people---there is nothing else that really brings me so much joy. When Christ was on the earth, His whole purpose was completely unselfish---He helped and ministered to and served the people around Him. My goal to show my faith in Christ is to emulate His example---to serve and minister to the people around me and help them know that they are special and that Heavenly Father loves them so much.

What is the Mormon lifestyle like? How do Mormons live?

Mormons live differently than many people. We are here to learn to become like God, and through His plan of happiness, we can. Many people say we look happier, or have a light around us that others don't have. This is the light of Christ shining through us. When we make good choices, we are happier and closer to God. We want to do all we can to live with Heavenly Father again, and making correct decisions helps us do that. We live our lives in accordance to God's plan---keeping our bodies clean inside and out, not using foul language, dressing modestly, and serving others around us, whether they are a part of our church or not. However, in many ways, people of the Mormon faith live lives much like most others in the world: we have families, hold occupations, endure struggles, obtain an education. However, through our normal day-to-day activities and challenges and joys, we rely on Heavenly Father for help. We pray for help and in gratitude. We read scriptures to learn and find answers to prayers. We attend church to be uplifted by lessons and to partake of the sacrament, a symbol of the Atonement of Christ. Show more Show less
