Hi I'm Derek

I love the Great NorthWest, I play the guitar, I love making omlettes, and I'm a Mormon.

About Me

I am the oldest of six children. Both of my parents are mormon and have live in the beautiful NorthWest. The NorthWest is just a wonderful place with such lush dark green trees everywhere. I enjoy being outside when I can. This world that God has given us is such a wonder. One of my favorite activities is repelling. There is nothing like it when you are looking over the cliffside about to jump off it, what a rush! One of my great enjoyments in life is playing my guitar. I feel like there is nothing better than me sitting down with my guitar in my hands. Other than that, I like to think of myself just like any normal person in this world, I enjoy life to its fullest, surrounded by friends and family. I enjoy the same jokes and the same social activities. At this moment now though I am serving the Lord by serving a mission to teach others of his gospel, and he has called me to serve in Ribeirão Preto, Brasil/Birmingham Alabama mission.

Why I am a Mormon

Like I mention before, my parents have been members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Because of that my family has been really strong in the church, and I thank God for this blessing. Everyone that has grown up in the church has once in their life decided that they needed to find out for themselves, and I have done this too. I started around the end of high school, major point and everyones lifes, I started to questions things in the church. Things like, "do I believe this is the true church", or, "do I believe that Josepth Smith really was given the power from God to translate the Book of Mormon", so I decided to find out for myself by doing what Joseph Smith did when he was a young boy, I studied, questioned, and then ask of God to tell me that this is true. I can bear witness that the spirit filled my soul and I knew from that time on that everything that I was ever taught when I was young is true. Jesus Christ is are personal savior, he took upon himself our sins, every sin we have ever commited, so we can return to our loving Heavenly Father, who knows us personally because he is our father. Our Father has created us a plan, before the creation of the earth, that we will go down, to receive knowledge, and then return to him. This plan is a plan of happiness, because I can testify that I felt happier ever since that day I knelt and prayed. Through faith, repentence, baptism, receiveing the Holy Ghost, and enduring to the end. We can return to our God.

How I live my faith

I live life my faith by doing what the Lord has commanded us to do. These commandment do not hender us, but strengtens us. These commandments are made so that we can be happy in this life and to me happiness is a goal for all of us, especially me. I go to church every sunday, to worship our lord. I follow the word of wisdom and take care of my and body, like God wants me to. I follow the law of Chasity and pay my tithing, because God has blessed me with so many things and helping building his church is a honor. Right now I am helping build-up his church by serving a mission, to invite people to come to Christ. Serving our God, there is nothing better, I want everyone to know his words, and his plan of salvation.

Why was a Restoration of the Gospel needed? Haven’t we always had the Bible?

The Bible contains the doctrine of Christ, they contain the teaches of Christ in Isreal. The Bible does contain the gospel, such as faith, repentence, baptism, receiving the Holy Ghost, and Enduring to the End. In order to do these ordainces such as baptism, a person needs authority from God to act in his name to perform these ordainces. Therefore when the preisthood authority was restored on to the earth to perform these things the fullness of the gospel was restored to the earth. Show more Show less

What do Mormons believe concerning the doctrine of grace?

Grace is needed in order to receive salvation. It is through The Atonement of Jesus Chirst that we receive this grace, but if we do not follow the commandments of God we can not be saved. We can not be saved by grace alone. We must have works, we must strive to do what is right by following the commandment, doing what the Lord has asked of us, and follow the example of Christ. Through are hard efforts to follow the teaches of Christ and the prophets, God will have mercy on us and then we will receive grace and then be able to enter the Kingdom of God. Show more Show less

Why do some call Mormonism a cult?

When most people hear the word "cult" they then think of devil worshippers. First off we are not devil worshippers, we believe in our savior, Jesus Christ, he is are only savior and it is only through him we can return to live with our Heavenly Father. Anyways, if you were to look up the word cult, it means a organized religion not of the origion of traditional religion. Many other churches believe since we do not agree on certain things, such as having a living prophet here today, this causes them to believe we are a organized religion that is breaking away from traditional religions in the world. Do Mormons regard the Bible as Holy Scripture and the word of God?

Yes, the Bible is the word of God, from the mouth of the prophets. The Bible contains a great history of the Jews and their relationship with God. Through the teachings and commandments of the prophets, given to them from God, we can use this as guidance in our life and know how we can come closer to are Heavenly Father and one day return to his presence. Also we believe that God just of old, continues to help us and to guide us, through the prophet today and other holy scripture such as the Book of Mormon. Show more Show less

Why do Mormons perform baptisms for the dead?

Baptism is needed for salvation, even Jesus Chirst was baptized. Many people in this world from past to present never hear of the gospel or been baptized by the proper authority. For that reason we perform proxy baptisms for the dead just as the times of old, as mention in 1 Corinthians 15:29 where Paul mentions doing baptisms for the dead. God wants all his children to have a chance to accept Jesus Christ and return to him, for this to happen baptism for the dead is needed for there salvation. This is done by someone who is substitued in for the deceased takes upon their name and is baptized. It is up to the them, the dead, to accept this baptism so then when they enter in on judgement day they can enter in to the kingdom of God. Show more Show less
