Hi I'm Scott Decker

I grew up in Cincinnati. I am a missionary in Arcadia, CA speaking Mandarin and I'm a Mormon.

About Me

After studying Chinese and business for my first year of college, I decided to serve as a missionary for two years for the Mormon Church. I am serving in California, speaking Mandarin. One of the deciding factors of my desire to serve a mission happened October 2010 while I was studying in Idaho. I was experiencing some odd symptoms like extreme thirst, excessive weight loss, poor vision and intense fatigue. One weekend I was so weak I could hardly get out of bed. When I did get out of bed, I could only crawl. I did not have strength to walk. After vomitting countless times, I finally gathered the energy to crawl into the living room of my apartment where I then asked one of my roommates (a returned missionary who held the priesthood) to give me a priesthood blessing (given to those who are sick). He knelt down to my level (I could not sit up or stand) and he gave me a blessing and promised me that if I had faith, I would be able to overcome this challenge and return to normal health. I was diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes shortly thereafter and immediately was sent to a Diabetes specialty center. I was told by doctors that my blood sugar had been so high for so long that I was lucky to be alive. I realized that Heavenly Father knows me as He knows all of His children. He was protecting me and it was apparent that I had a greater purpose in life. It was then that I knew, nothing doubting that He lives and that I would dedicate two years of my life to serving Him full time.

Why I am a Mormon

For me, it wasn't just about what made me feel good and who welcomed me. It was about the truth. Over time, my testimony grew, but when I was young my faith was tried and tested and I realized I was depending on others' faith. So I went on a quest to find what was really truth. I started studying a little deeper into the things which I said I believed, expecting to prove them wrong. What is amazing about the truth is that it is impossible to prove wrong. Knowing now that this truly is God's church I look back on those experiences and everyday I know this is not just another church - It's truth. From that time on I had a true desire to follow God's will for me, which included being a part of His church on this earth. I knew I would become a happier and better person by being a Latter-day Saint and know that I was fulfilling God's will for me during this life. I know that when we truly live the gospel of Jesus Christ, death loses it's sting, hell loses its power and we prepare and look forward to that day when Christ will reign again in His glory on the earth.

How I live my faith

I am serving a two year mission for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in California to those who speak Mandarin Chinese. I will be here until August 2013. As a missionary, I dedicate my time (2 full time years), talents, and all efforts to bringing the message of our church to those who are ready and willing to receive it. My purpose as a missionary is to invite others to come unto Christ and help them build a personal relationship with our Father in Heaven. I know that as I have faith and put forth my best effort, I will be able to help others find the true happiness and peace that I have found in this Church, know that God has a plan for us, that He loves all of His children, and that He still "doeth nothing save it be for the benefit of the world."
