Hi I'm Ben

I'm a husband, Psychologist, and an almost Father. I'm a Mormon.

About Me

I'm studying Psychology at York University and will soon be starting a primary PGCE. I love to go on dates with my wife, I make the best creamy mash, and I love having nerf gun battles with my family (my very big family, 3 brothers, 4 sisters, 2 parents, plus a few extras). I really enjoy spending time with kids, in fact, it's considered unusual if children are not attempting some form of pile on/swinging on my arms/being thrown in the air when I'm around. I love playing board games and quizzes, and I particularly like winning.

Why I am a Mormon

As a child I was brought up as a Mormon, but through my teenage years I had many questions about my faith and God's existence. Over time, this led to serious contemplation, study, and prayer. I wish I could express the joy I feel when I receive answers to my prayers and know that God is watching over me and listens to what I say to him. My faith is not based upon one faith confirming experience, but through a combination of many answered prayers and faith promoting experiences. I love the doctrines of the church, while many outside the church consider our practices; such as abstinence from alcohol, tea, coffee, pre-marital sex etc as well as the great dedication that comes through missionary service and performing callings in the church, to be restrictive and burdensome, I have always felt that they have improved me and made my life better. I am a happy person, and believe that much of the happiness I feel would not be there if I was not a faithful member of the church.

How I live my faith

Because of the conviction I feel about my faith, and the happiness it has brought me, I decided to serve a 2 year mission where I served and taught people in Zambia (Africa). I loved teaching people about my faith, and most of all, I loved seeing how when they lived the teachings of the church, it made them happier as well. Since then I have continued to teach people about the gospel and have received a calling (a voluntary assignment in the church) to lead the teaching of those who investigate the church in my local congregation. I also headed the YSA (Young Single Adult) programme in the York area for a year. I organised and oversaw several weekly activities and lessons which regularly attracted 40-50 people (including many who are not members of the Mormon faith).

Who are the Mormons?

Mormons are members of "The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints". A lot of people call us Mormons because we follow the teachings of a book called The Book of Mormon which we consider scripture like the Bible. Mormon was the prophet who compiled the Book of Mormon from the teachings of many prophets. It teaches the same Christian teachings found in the Bible, but documents these from the experiences of an ancient American civilization around the same period as the Bible was written. The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints is a worldwide Christian church of about 14 million people. Show more Show less
