Hi I'm Jess

I write young adult sci-fi. I'm a mom. I'm a Mormon.

About Me

I make up stories. While I drive kids to school and soccer, while I burn dinner, while I sleep. A few years ago I started writing a particularly exciting one down, and now it's being read by a few big agents in the publishing industry. Wish me luck! On Thursdays my husband and I rock out with our band. He plays the drums, I'm learning the bass. I do not rock yet, but I believe someday I will. I also believe someday I'll have a dear little farm where my husband and I will raise chickens and sheep and dogs and cats and kids. Wish me luck.

Why I am a Mormon

Raised a member of the church, I experienced the gradual, trusting conversion of childhood. In college, my testimony of the gospel was challenged by the adult world. A lot of smart people didn't believe in the existence of God. For the first time in my life, I questioned my beliefs down to the core. I decided to ask God. If he wasn't real, he wouldn't answer, right? As a writer, I'm supposed to be able to express myself, but it's hard to describe what I felt. Peace, comfort, calm, like remembering. Whatever the right words are, I know those feelings didn't come from inside me. Inside me was nothing but confusion and big questions. I still, every now and then, have to ask Him if He's there. He is. And he listens, even to the questions we ask all the time. So why this church? I believe God still cares enough to speak to us through prophets. I believe the Book of Mormon testifies of Christ, who loves everybody. I want to be like Him, and The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints teaches me how.

How I live my faith

On Sunday, I play the piano so the kids can sing about the Savior. Before that, I was the chorister for the kids. Through music, we learn about Christ's life, the prophets of the Bible and Book of Mormon, about Joseph Smith and being a loving person. Kids voices are like listening to heaven. When they're singing, I mean. Sometimes, they sound not so heavenly! The rest of the week, I do my best to raise kids who are kind. We try to do good things, like recycle and donate clothes, food and toys, and adopt kitties from the Humane Society. I want my family to see and fill the needs of others, like Christ did. That's how we change the world.
