Hi I'm Spencer

I'm an athlete and missionary. I love the gospel of Jesus Christ. Mwen pale Kreyòl-Ayisyen. And I'm a Mormon.

About Me

I am an avid sports fan. I love to play pick-up games of basketball and football and I love to watch both, especially at the college level. I was a two-time State participant in the triple jump in track and field during high school. I would love to continue playing competitive sports after I go home from my mission and I am thinking about becoming a sports broadcaster. Right now, my hobbies include studying the gospel, teaching my brothers and sisters about Heavenly Father's plan for us, and giving service every day. As a missionary in South Florida, I have the wonderful opportunity to share the knowledge I have with those who are searching for something more in their lives. Nothing compares to the satisfaction of helping others build their faith in Christ and come closer to Him through the sacred covenant of baptism. It is easily the greatest experience of my life and I really feel that when all is said and done, this will be the best two years of my life. Mwen renmen espò. M renmen jwe baskèt avèk foutbòl ameriken, epi m renmen gade yo toulede, espesyalman lè se ekip kolèj yo k ap jwe. Mwen te patisipe nan espò nan lekòl segondè epi mwen ta renmen fè sa nan kolèj apre m tounen lakay mwen. Kounyeya la, mwen renmen etidye levanjil la, ede lòt moun aprann plan Bondye a, epi bay sèvis a lòt moun. Kòm yon misyonè nan Florida, m gen bèl opòtinite a pou mwen pataje konesans m genyen an avèk tout moun k ap chèche plis nan lavi yo, e eksperyans sa a pi gran pase nenpòt sa m konn fè.

Why I am a Mormon

I was born into the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, but I didn't always know that it was true. I had a lot of doubts growing up, especially as a teenager, but as I have begun to apply the principles of the gospel of Jesus Christ, I have come to know for myself that this church is true, that it is led by a prophet of God. How? Simple. Each commandment God gives us comes with a promised blessing that we will receive if we are obedient to that commandment. I have seen a drastic improvement in the quality of my life as I have really tried to live and apply the gospel and be obedient to the commandments God has given us. My joy and happiness have been more full and lasting as I have followed the example of our Savior in truly doing the will of my Father. I have found a peace in my life that wasn't there before and I know without a doubt that this has only come because this gospel and church are true and the blessings we have been promised are real.

How I live my faith

I am currently serving as a full-time missionary in the great Florida Ft Lauderdale mission in south Florida. Serving as a full-time missionary means that I am in the service of God 24/7. I teach people the gospel of Jesus Christ and how it can bless their lives, and I help those I teach apply it by repenting and making the covenant of baptism, and as part of my missionary service I have become fluent in the Haitian Creole language in order to help the Haitians here in South Florida receive these blessings in their lives. As a missionary, I do not do anything for myself, but despite this, I have never been more satisfied with my life. There is no more fulfilling work than that of helping my brothers and sisters find the path back to our Heavenly Father. Kounyeya la, m ap sèvi yon misyon a plen tan nan misyon Florida Fort Lauderdale la nan Florida sid. Sa vledi m nan sèvis Bondye a vennkat-sou-vennkat. M ansenye moun levanjil Jezikri a epi mwen ede yo repanti e batize pou yo ka resevwa tout benediksyon Bondye genyen pou yo.

Why was a Restoration of the Gospel needed? Haven’t we always had the Bible?

Spencer
No we haven't always had the Bible. In fact, the Bible itself shows us the very need for a Restoration. God has always worked with us in one way, and we learn from the Bible that this way is to call prophets to teach us the gospel of Jesus Christ and help us to live His commandments. Prophets have 3 distinct characteristics: 1)They are called of God; 2)They are special witnesses of Christ; and 3)They hold the priesthood, or the power and authority given to man to act in God's name for the salvation of His children. We also learn from the Bible that the people of the world often reject the prophets God sends, resulting in a state called apostasy-a condition in which men are distanced spiritually from God. To "restore" in the context of the gospel means "to bring back" or "to give again in the original form", and this occurs when God calls another prophet to teach the world the gospel. This happened many times throughout the Bible, creating a need for the gospel to be restored. Thanks to the records these prophets left behind, we have what we know as the Bible but we also see that this book is not the source of the gospel. Prophets are necessary. Ancient prophets provided counsel relevant to their times and prophets today do the same. Without them, we could never know the fulness of the gospel or receive all the blessings Heavenly Father has for us. Thanks to a Restoration in our times, we now have access to all these blessings for us and our families. Show more Show less

Why do Mormon missionaries proselyte?

Spencer
The "good news" of the restored gospel of Jesus Christ is not just for a select few. It is for all men, because we are all children of God and He loves us each very much. Jesus Christ, in the New Testament, instructed his Apostles to "go...into all the world, and preach the gospel to every creature" (Mark 16:15). This admonition still stands today. All who know the truth are called to share the light and knowledge they have with their friends and neighbors. For this reason, young men and women offer 18 months to 2 years of their service to help spread the gospel and share the "glad tidings of great joy" it has to offer. Show more Show less

How can I find someone to talk with, in person, about the Mormon religion?

Spencer
There are several ways to find members of the church to talk to in person. Probably the easiest way is to find the "Worship with Us" section on this website and put in your address to find the nearest building to you and the time of worship services. The other options available on this website include the "Chat with Us" link found on the left-hand side of nearly every page and also the "Missionary Request" option found on the top of the page. "Chat with Us" allows you to chat with someone right now online to get answers to your questions and also allows you to request that missionaries be sent to talk to you. "Missionary Request" allows you to request the missionaries yourself by entering your name, address, phone number, and any comments you want them to know. Show more Show less
