Hi I'm Derek

I'm learner. I love sports. I love being an uncle and I'm a Mormon.

About Me

I love reading books. Almost nothing is better than getting swept away in a good book. I also love the outdoors. seeing God's creations in such grand scale is so breath taking to me. I love the night sky. Looking up at the endless streams of light cascading down from the stars of heaven fills me with wonder. I love sports. Truly, they are my past time. I play Football, Volleyball and Basketball. I also love weight training and excercising. It just feels good to have a healthy body, and to be able to do everything that I want to do physically. I am the brother of seven siblings, and the best uncle in the whole wide world to my four nieces and one nephew.

Why I am a Mormon

I am a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints because of experience , what it has done for me, and becuase what I have learned just makes sense. Many people ask, "Why do you have so many rules?" or "How could anyone be a member of a church, which keeps them from doing so many things?". But in reality, it is because of all of those "rules" and by not doing those "things" that I have come to know that I really do belong to the church of Jesus Christ. We call those "rules" and "things" commandments. I have seen that as i do my best to live them, God blesses me for it. If they weren't really commandments from God, if they really weren't from Him, I wouldn't receive any blessings for keeping them. But I have received those blessings, so I know that they true commandments from Him. And if they are true commandments from God, it means that this is His Church with His power. Also, as I have learned and studied the scriptures, questions have come to mind. Nowhere else in the world, have I been able to find answers that allow my soul to rest, like the answers that I have found within the doctrine of this church. It just makes sense. Which is because it really is from God. Almost two years ago, one of my closest friends died in a tragic car accident. At the time I was far from my home, my family and my friends. I was essentially seperated from all that I had previouly known and loved, and because of commitments that I had made and would not break, I could not return. But I was not alone. Because of what I had learned and what I had come to know was true, I knew exactly where my dear friend had gone, and that I will indeed see him again. That brought, and still does bring, so much comfort to my soul.

How I live my faith

I live my faith by doing what i know that I need to, day by day. I live my faith by sharing it with others. I recently returned from spending two years away from my family and friends, sharing what I have come to know is the true teachings of Jesus Christ. It was the most defining moment of my life. Other than that I have the opportunity to serve here locally everyday. We follow Jesus Christ and His example, so we look for opportunities to help our fellow man, because that what He did. Because Christ's church has no paid ministry, it gives us all the opportunity to offer our time to fulfill different responsibilities in the church, to help maintain it, and help it to grow. I've had the chance to teach classes from the scriptures to young children, older youth and also adults.

Can you tell me about Mormon customs: how you dress for church, what holidays you celebrate, etc.?

When I go to church I want to look my best. My Father in Heaven has given me so much and there truly is no way that i can repay Him. However, I can still do many things to show my appreciation and love for Him. So when I go to church I wear a dress shirt, a tie and a suit. Its the best that I have, so I wear it to church on sundays to respect Him and show my love for Him and everything that He has done for me. I love holidays. Christmas is my favorite becaue of the general great feeling that comes with it. And Easter is so important because of what it means. We celebrate it because of the resurrection of Jesus Christ, His victory over death and sin. If there hadn't been an Easter, there'd be no need for a Christmas. We also celebrate traditional and national holidays, birthdays, marriages and all of those other good things too. Show more Show less

What do Mormons believe about family?

Our Families mean everything to us. In our families we can learn what true love is. We can feel the love that exists betwen parent and child. I believe God does this because the love we can feel from our parents, or the love our children can feel from us, is a fraction of the love that God, our Heavenly Father feels for us. In our families we can have the happiest of times, and also some of the saddest. However, it is through these experiences that we can learn and grow. There are some things that you can learn in a family that you can't learn anywhere else. That is why God blesses us with families, so that we can have those experiences that will prepare us to live together forever with Him. We have a hope that through living the Gospel of Jesus Christ we can live with our families forever. But just as any blessing or gift that we can receive from God, we must work for it. As we keep God's commandments, He has promised us that we (our families) and He can live together forever. Show more Show less

Why is self-reliance important to Mormons? Why do Mormons talk about emergency preparedness?

The Gospel of Jesus Christ really is a personal, spiritual preparation to return to live with our Father in Heaven. So in like manner, we believe in living a physically prepared life also. As we are prepared for physical emergencies, it also allows us to be able to help and serve others at a greater capacity. If we're prepared, we won't fear. We will also be able to then help others.
