Hi I'm Karen

I am married with two adult children, I teach earth science and physics, I love spending time outdoors, and I'm a Mormon.

About Me

I have been a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints for over 40 years, being baptized in my early teens. I hold a Bachelors Degree in Recreation Management and earned my Masters Degree in Education when my kids were still in elementary school. I currently teach earth sciences, and physics to 7th and 8th grade students in a midsize public school district. I love spending time outdoors with my husband and two adult children. Hobbies include hiking, camping, bicycling, riding motorcycles (mine is a blue road cruiser!), traveling, photography, racquetball, horseback riding, baking, reading, sewing, quilting, and spending time with my dog! I like excitement and adventure, having enjoyed white water rafting, zip lining, long distance bicycling, etc. I love animals of all types (Just about anyway! Not real thrilled with insects!)

Why I am a Mormon

As a pre-teen taking lessons in preparation for confirmation in a Protestant church, I really struggled with the idea of the Holy Trinity. It did not make sense to me that three beings could be one being. Although the pastor tried to explain it I just could not accept it. This was the summer that the missionaries from the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints knocked on our door. As I listened to them explain the doctrines of the church, learned of the focus being on living as Jesus Christ did, and discovered the truth about the gospel of Jesus Christ being restored from the days when He walked on Earth, I felt a calm assurance that what I was learning was the truth. I was baptized, as were my parents, and it was the best decision of my life. The gospel of Jesus Christ has provided me a compass with which to guide my decisions. The comfort of the Holy Ghost has been a constant companion in times of trouble or challenge. The commitments that I have made to Christ have steered me in a path back to Him as I experience mortal life. Jesus Christ is the Son of our Heavenly Father sent to earth to atone for all mankind. He walked the earth a perfect being, living and teaching us by example how to conduct our lives. He was crucified and died that we might have eternal life, and He did so because He loves us. Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends. Jesus Christ is my friend support, guide, counselor, and above all, my Savior. Why am I a Mormon....still? Because I was taught the truth and have developed a personal relationship with my Savior through my membership in His church.

How I live my faith

I spend a fair amount of time involved in living the gospel of Jesus Christ. I have served in my church in leadership positions with the young children, young women, organized congregational recreation activities, and have spent 13 years (and counting!) in a role providing camp equipment for our young women camp which involves about 200 people yearly. I also currently serve as a member missionary, assisting the full time missionaries with anything they need as they serve the community. This can be in the role of teacher, or as a support for a community member who has a relationship with the missionaries and needs assistance. There is an emphasis on serving the community in various capacities. I participate in various service projects, volunteer time to my neighborhood and other organizations. More important, however, is the example I set in my daily life style. The truth of the gospel of Jesus Christ is best demonstrated by the choices I make in my every day interactions with people and decisions I make. Although certainly far from perfect, I try to exemplify the values as taught by Christ in His ministry. I avoid any activity that does not invite the Spirit into my life, as I rely on the quiet guidance and comfort I was blessed with when baptized. The influence of the Spirit is a constant reminder and guide in my life for which I am grateful.
