Hi I'm Brian

I grew up in Idaho, am a former high school math teacher and now a college professor. I'm a Mormon.

About Me

I'm a lucky father and husband. I enjoy lots of things a bit, and only a few things a lot. I enjoy being involved in education, and my wife and I enjoy watching college football together. Occasionally, we tailgate before a big game by setting up a tent and grilling and having fun with friends and family. We learned how to do it properly at the University of Georgia, where tailgating and football are taken very seriously.

Why I am a Mormon

I'm a Mormon because I have felt the Spirit of God while reading the Book of Mormon. I'm an academic, and so I have a very high regard for reason, logic, evidence, and precision. My mathematical background has helped me to think critically about my faith and I believe my faith is stronger for it. Likewise, my educational training has allowed me to reflect deeply on how I've learned and grown spiritually. At times, this growth has been quite difficult, but I am happy when I am able to use my experiences to help those of a similar temperament re-engage with their Heavenly Father.

How I live my faith

My wife and I work in the Primary, the Sunday school for children. Each Sunday, we teach and talk about spiritual things with 7 and 8 year olds. They are wonderful. They demand clarity, honesty, and meaning and it is refreshing to be edified with them each week. We also have a family night each Monday, where we talk to our 4 year old about important things. Her directness, openness, and sincerity frequently remind me of why the Lord said, "Suffer little children, and forbid them not, to come unto me: for of such is the kingdom of heaven."

What is faith?

Brian
For me, faith is best understood in terms of faithfulness - fidelity to something. I have and exercise faith when I stay true to the inspiration I have received from God. I have felt His Spirit while reading the Book of Mormon and He has brought me peace in times of serious difficulty. Having faith means that I remember those experiences and live my life according to the principles embodied in them through whatever comes my way. Show more Show less
