Hi I'm Denise

I'm a Mormon.

About Me

I love words. I just graduated college with a degree in English Language which means that I'm a word-nerd. I have two bookshelves in my apartment which are overflowing with books. Agatha Christie is my favorite author; I named my betta fish after her. I spent six weeks in the United Kingdom studying varieties of English and seeing every play or musical I could. If I had the time, I would audition for community theater. I moved around a lot growing up. I went to three elementary schools, one middle school, and two high schools. I'm the oldest of four; I have one brother and two sisters. My family loves movies, music, and dachshunds. We name all of our family pets after movie or literary characters. My dad took us on family vacations to random places like Lubbock, Texas or Roswell, New Mexico so now I love to travel. I'm a wife and a first-time mom. My husband and I met at a university club swing dance. He proposed to me at a swing dance. And we had swing dancing at our wedding. Now that we have a baby we don't go out to dance like we used to but my husband will still dance with me in our kitchen. Having a baby has changed my perspective on life. I thank God every day that He trusted my husband and I enough to bless us with this little boy who we love so much. My family means everything to me and I love my boys so much.

Why I am a Mormon

My parents raised me in the Church but once I left to college I had to make a choice: will I continue to live this faith or not? I could not imagine my life without my faith. I always sort of knew the gospel was true, but I wanted to be sure, for myself. I read the Book of Mormon, again. I read it and looked for mentions of Christ and His teachings. I prayed to know if those things which I had read were true and God blessed me with an answer. It is so wonderful to know that God will answer our prayers if we turn to Him. No matter what happens in my life, I can rely on the teachings of God in the Bible and the Book of Mormon.

How I live my faith

Most of the callings I've had in the church have been music related. My favorite calling was to be the ward choir director. I love the hymns of the church because they bring the Spirit so quickly into our hearts. I love to visit the women in my ward. They provide strength and guidance and love when I need it. My husband and I have family home evening once a week. We take turns preparing a little spiritual thought. We've decided to use the talks from General Conference as our weekly lesson material. God sends us current revelation through the Prophet and Apostles so we want to remember what the Lord wants us to know. Our son is so small that he won't remember our family home evenings, or family prayers, or scripture study. But we are working to develop these habits now so that he can grow up in a home where the Savior is worshiped and His teachings are studied. We have put up paintings of the Savior and the temple we were married in so that we can look at them and be reminded of our responsibilities to God, each other, and our son.
