Hi I'm John Degel

I'm a Mormon.

About Me

I am the oldest of nine children, a Vietnam veteran and an award winning journalist. I majored in the history/social science broadfield with the intention of becoming a secondary school teacher. Instead, I found myself working as a reporter/photographer in various newspapers across Montana. I also had an interesting interim career as an assistant to Lieutenant Governor Allan Kolstad during the Centennial Administration of Governor Stan Stephens. I was also a professional real beard Santa for 11 years before giving it up. Now I concentrate on my writing... and a second career as a comedy magician/ventriloquist. I've performed all over Montana and in Wyoming, Illinois, Utah, Nevada, California, Washington and Idaho.

Why I am a Mormon

I found the Church of Jesus of Latter-day Saints through the example of my newspaper employers, Curtis and Bonnie Starr. The example they set impressed me enough to investigate the church and I converted at the ripe old age of 56. It was the best decision I ever made in my life.

How I live my faith

My entire life has changed since becoming a "Morman" in 2006. I am a member of a small Branch in Malta, Montana, where I have served as Branch Librarian, Branch Mission Leader, alternate Sunday School teacher and currently as the Branch Clerk. I try to be a good home teacher and get involved in all sorts of activities within the branch. I use my magic and ventriloquism to pass on the good news and the tenets of my faith to the children in the Branch... and to the children in the community through my performances at benefits and fund-raisers. I also perform for schools giving the children the fundamentals about caring for each other, avoiding and preventing bullying and staying away from drugs, tobacco and alcohol.
