Hi I'm Spencer

I am an academic, an athlete, and an Air Force brat. I'm a Mormon.

About Me

I'm a college student double majoring in Chemical Engineering and Chinese. My dad's in the Air Force so I grew up moving all around the country and world. I love music and sports, whether playing or in the audience. I particularly enjoy playing piano, trumpet, organ, football, and racquetball. I also love reading and just thinking about how and why the world works and is the way it is. I lived in Taiwan for two years, and am living in China for training as a fluently bi-lingual engineer. I've been married for about a year, and more than anything I just enjoy enjoying life.

Why I am a Mormon

I am a Mormon because I know that this church is true. I have read the Book of Mormon and prayed to know whether or not it is true, and I felt a peaceful comforting knowledge that it is true. Whenever I read the Book of Mormon regularly, my life is filled with an added measure of peace, and life just seems to go better. As an engineer, I also love the logical consistency of church organization. When he was on the earth, Jesus Christ organized His church with apostles and prophets who were authorized to administer the church in His name. After His crucifixion and death, the apostles were persecuted and eventually killed and that authority was lost. Of all the different religions I have encountered, this church is the only one that is organized the same way that Christ organized His church when He was alive. This church teaches that God is not dead, that He still loves us and provides direction to us through His prophets--just as He did in the days of Moses, Noah, and Abraham. I believe that God is consistent and unchanging, and that He continues to function using the patterns that He established anciently. The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints is the embodiment of those patterns in our age. Religion is something that is inherently beyond the scope of our total understanding. We cannot comprehend how Jesus atoned for the sins of the world. But we can feel it to be true. I have felt Jesus Christ's love in my life, and strive to live in accordance with His plan for me. That is why I'm a Mormon. Both the spiritual and logical parts of me tell me that what the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints teaches is true. I am so grateful that God loves us enough to have once again organized His church on the earth so that we can all be eternally happy and return to live in His presence.

How I live my faith

My faith is central to every aspect of my life. I do my best to be involved and to help the lives of those around me. At church, I'm in charge of organizing Sunday School classes and making sure the teachers have everything they need to help class members feel God's love and understand His teachings. I have also been helping with YMCA activities in the local community, and love seeing kid's faces light up. I try to be kind to everyone with whom I interact, and help however I can with whatever they're facing. I know that we are all children of God and that regardless of individual backgrounds or beliefs, we all deserve to be treated with love and respect.
