Hi I'm J.R.

I’m a husband, father, aspiring backyard gardener, and can still beat my boys in most sports. And I’m a Mormon.

About Me

I'm a long-time resident of the Seattle-Tacoma area. My wonderful wife and I have been married for 18 years and we have 3 pretty cool kids. We live on just under an acre and if I had my choice, my yard would be converted into a vast edible lanscape. I love to exercise and play all sports that require more than 2 thumbs or a keyboard to participate. I'm a huge BYU fan (where my wife and I met) and almost equally a Washington Husky fan. It just kills me every time they have to play each other.

Why I am a Mormon

As far back as I can remember, I’ve had an intense, innate desire to know and understand the purpose of life. I’ve never been content to just go through the motions without wondering how my choices and actions fit with the larger context of where I came from and where I could go following this earth life. And I’ve always felt that the ability to gain real understanding and meaning was within my grasp. So I studied, prayed, and tested the teachings of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. But with thousands of Christian denominations, the odds just seemed too unlikely to me that that I would be fortunate enough to be born into a church whose teachings most closely aligned with what I read in the Bible. It was as if the odds told me the church couldn’t be true. But as I continued to study, pray, and ponder I was blessed with experiences that helped me know that the gospel of Jesus Christ is true. I’m a Mormon for many reasons, but one of the most important is that it teaches me about the real nature of our Father in Heaven and His Son Jesus Christ, and lays out a perfect plan of happiness for me and my family.

How I live my faith

I love being part of a church that can take beautiful and expansive doctrines and translate them into practical, day-to-day teachings for how I live my life. To live my faith I try in my own imperfect way to simply serve those around me. My attention is first and foremost with my family. And with 3 children, that service often takes the form of just spending time with them in the pursuits and hobbies that they enjoy. I also have a group of 12-13 year-old boys with whom I spend a great deal of time, whether on monthly campouts, weekly youth activities or providing Sunday gospel instruction.
