Hi I'm Manda

I'm a Mormon.

About Me

I'm Manda. I'm a biblical scholar in training, dancer, reader, and a Mormon. I believe that warm cookies on a plate can cheer even the darkest moments, that reading a good book is one of the best things mortals can do, and that art draws one closer to God. Most importantly, I believe that "Earth's crammed with heaven, And every common bush afire with God; But only he who sees takes off his shoes. The rest sit around and pluck blackberries." (Elizabeth Barrett Browning) I'm currently a student at Brigham Young University, studying Ancient Near Eastern Studies and World Dance. When I'm not translating passages from the Old Testament or diagramming the hostile takeovers of Mesopotamia, I'm in the dance building. BYU is the best place on earth and I'm incredibly grateful to pursue my higher education at such an incredible university. When I'm not doing school related things, I'm hanging out with friends or reading. I love Young Adult novels and read a few too many if you ask my mom. I'm a book hoarder as my bookshelves can attest and if I'm not reading something I feel as if I'm not going about life correctly. I'm a Jane Austen addict and think Nathaniel Hawthorne is one of the most brilliant writers to have ever graced planet earth. If you get me started on a book, I'm probably not going to shut up until you know exactly what I think about everything from the plot to the thematic elements to the character development. Yeah, I'm a literary nerd.

Why I am a Mormon

I was born and raised Mormon, but like everyone else, I have a reason for choosing to follow Christ through adulthood. Growing up, I fell in love with reading the scriptures, especially the Book of Mormon. It's the most incredible book I've ever read, and I can't get enough of it. I love being able to search the scriptures and connect stories and principles and grasp the nuances that they afford. The doctrines and principles are incredible and I love how these intricate stories so often have direct parallels to the trials I go through. I love the strength I gain from reading the scriptures most of all. I also love being a member of the Church and I know that this is the Lord's church restored in the latter days as was prophesied by prophets of old. When it comes down to it, that's the driving force behind everything I do in my life and I wouldn't have it any other way.

How I live my faith

I live my faith in everything I do. From prayer before my feet touch the ground to scripture study between classes to what I wear and say, my faith has completely defined my life and that makes me incredibly happy. I firmly believe that the hand of God can be seen in every aspect of our lives from the key decisions we make to little everyday things. As this is the case, I try to live every day with the mindset of being in a state of mind and heart to see those interactions with Divinity. I try my best to love others, keep the commandments, and follow the Spirit's direction for my life. Basically, I do the things that make me smile. Because I want the gospel to be the central point in my life, I build my days and weeks around it. Scripture study is obviously one of my major focuses. Not only do I study the Old Testament at school all day, I also make time to read the rest of our standard works, especially The Book of Mormon. I'm also lucky enough to live near the Provo Temple and have the opportunity to attend once a week. Honestly, the temple makes my week! I'm currently the ward choir director and love every minute of practice. I love how music can communicate the Spirit! It's so cool. Really, these are just a few things that I do. Being Mormon encompasses so much more than a list of activities. It's a mindset; one that's focused on living your life the way Christ wants you to live, and following His example in all the detailed facets of your life.
