Hi I'm Carmen Shumway

I'm a Mormon.

About Me

I am 76 years old, married for 54 years and have 6 children, 29 grandchildren and 6 great grandchildren. Our children have been the main focus of our lives and we have helped them develop skills in music, sports and career development. We have worked and played together. I am a twin and we were born while my father was serving as a mission president over the Mexican Mission.   I have served three missions, for the Mormon Church: to Mexico, to Oregon and to Nauvoo, Illinois. We also lived in Western Samoa for three years and loved the people there. I was a stay at home mom but taught in the Elementary Schools for 17 years when my children were older. I have been involved in community service for the last 15 years and feel joy as I try to preserve the heritage of our small community which was settled in 1878 under the direction of Brigham Young. I have also served on a Committee to beautify our town. I love life and living in a little town where we share and cherish one another.

Why I am a Mormon

I am a Mormon because I follow Jesus Christ. I love the Plan of Happiness that I have proven works as we have raised our children while serving others and basing our decisions on the teachings of Heavenly Father and his Son, Jesus the Christ. As I witness our children with a similar life style have the same success with their children I feel even more the truthfulness of the doctrine and practices of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. I have studied and compared many religions in my missionary work. I see good in all of them. A living prophet has warned me of trends to avoid and kept me safe from the vices that have played havoic with our society. I love to follow Jesus and are so indebted to him for his atonement in our behalf.

How I live my faith

I have worked with youth groups in our church for 35 years. I have also been involved in 4-H. I love working with the youth. I learned early that a visit with them was more important than elaorate visual aids. I tried to support them in their school and community actibvites. I have served in our Women's group as well, in leadership, teaching and visting in the homes to care for those who are ill or need help with family needs. This service has brought me great joy and helped me form lasting friendships. I try to look for the good in those around me and I have enjoyed my associaiton with those of different cultures and have learned so much from them. I am edified by the time I spend reading the words of our Savior and other prophets and gaining little nuggets of truth that bless my life and that of my family.
