Hi I'm Richard

I'm an aerospace engineer. I play basketball, read fantasy and science fiction, and eat anything with bacon in it. I'm a Mormon.

About Me

I am married with three children. I enjoy reading, but tend to stick to science fiction and fantasy novels. I am a navigation engineer for a rocket company, but spend most of my time writing software. I enjoy playing basketball, but I'm not that good anymore. I will spend hours playing video games if I can. I have a definite option about the latest gadget even if I tend to be a late adopter. I apparently like making statements immediately followed by exceptions and qualifiers. I have a weird sense of humor.

Why I am a Mormon

I was born into the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. As I was growing up, I never doubted the truth of what I was taught regarding Christ, his teachings and expectations for me, or the fact that I belonged to the true church of Christ. It just always made sense to me. It is an internally consistent cosmology. But as much as it makes sense in my head, my testimony lives in my heart. That is where I feel the Spirit of the Lord speaking to me, telling me what is true. I know that I can always find an answer to a question, through scripture study and prayer. I have had my prayers answered in definite ways. I know that Jesus is the Christ in a way that makes my heart burn just to think of it. I know that Joseph Smith was a prophet of God in the same way. The Book of Mormon is scripture, a companion to the Bible. The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints is the Lord's kingdom on the earth.

How I live my faith

I currently serve as a counselor to the bishop of our ward. My specific area of concern is the youth, those members aged 12 to 18. I attend their weekly activities as much as I can, given that there are six distinct groups (boys and girls 12-13, 14-15, 16-18) . I assist the adult advisers to the youth with any issues they may have. I am involved in the Scouting program as the Chartered Organization Representative. Which basically means I have to go to meetings, but also get to go on any of the outings any of the groups go on. I conduct Sunday sacrament meetings every third month, in rotation with the other counselor and the bishop. I am responsible for getting one or two of the youth to give a short talk on a specific gospel topic every Sunday and get the adult speakers every other month. I assist the bishop in determining which members should be asked to serve in the various volunteer positions within the ward. I also assist with the collection and processing of the various offerings given by members of the ward.
