Hi I'm Arlen

I'm a Mormon.

About Me

I am a small town pharmacist, father of 7 children and husband of a beautiful wife for almost 31 years. My hobby has been my kids and their sports and activities for most of the last 30 years. I enjoy music of many varieties, sports, outdoor activities etc. etc. I probably have too many interests but I enjoy life.

Why I am a Mormon

I was born to parents who came from LDS heritage but were not active in the church. My older brother was invited to attend primary, a childrens program, by a friend. My mother started taking him and soon rekindled her faith. She took us to church faithfully. When I was 11 or 12 I remember losing a part on a bike I was fixing. I remembered that I was taught that God answered prayers and tried it. When I opened my eyes I was looking directly at the part on the ground in front of me. I have had many other prayers answered, not always right away but in the Lords time and way. Sometimes he makes us work for answers. I have read the Book of Mormon and can see that the prophets who wrote it received revelation for their times and also saw our day. I have learned much from the examples of the people in the book. I have a calm peaceful feeling when I read it that tells me it is true. I also love to read the Bible. I know Jesus is my Savior and loves me. The Bible and the Book of Mormon work together and testify of Jesus. I know God also speaks to men in our day. Modern prophets receive direction specific to our day. My Dad smoked and had an an alcohol problem. I saw how those things complicated his life and eventually led to an early death from stroke. (My abstaining gradfather lived healthy to 99...my dad died at 67) It was easy for me to see how the Word of Wisdom, a revelation to Joseph Smith outlining the churches code of health, is evidence of Gods love for his children. I have witnessed the joy that comes to myself and other people as they live the teachings of the gospel and also the sorrow that comes as they ignore God's warnings. Most importantly I feel the spirit of the Holy Ghost when I am faithful and obedient. I feel the Spirit when I listen to modern day prophets and others called of God to serve in His church. I have felt the Spirit and inspiration as I have served in callings in the church. The things I have learned and lived in this church make me happy.

How I live my faith

Any religion would be useless if it didn't make your life better all week long and not just on Sunday. God wants us to be happy so all of the teachings of the Saviour are to that end. It doesn't mean life is easy but life is easier with a long-term (eternal) perspective. We recently had a tragedy in our small community where four youth were killed. Although it has been very difficult, the understanding of an eternal plan and what happens after we die gives hope...hope in Christ's atonement and resurrection. As we turn burdens over to Him it makes life better. Prayer is a big part of my life. Of course we all pray when we have troubles but I try to pray and listen for guidance on the good days too. When God gives us strength and means we should be willing to use those things to serve Him. As I listen after I pray I have thoughts and feelings come as to what is most important and sometimes even how to do things. I then have to act on those thoughts and feelings and am always glad when I do. Church on Sunday renews my spirit through the teachings and associations with good people. I try to read some scripture daily to keep me focused in between. I don't know how I would have raised 7 kids without the teachings of the church. It also helps me to be a better husband, employer, employee etc. There is a lot of evil and temptation in the world. One of the LDS prophets taught us to memorize a favorite hymn or scripture to replace impure thoughts and feelings. I find this very helpful. I try to keep busy doing good things so there is very little room for bad to enter in. I find that service to others is the most satisfying activity to be involved in. I know that is what Jesus did and told us to follow His example. I love lds.org where I can find all sorts of answers to life situations from the words of prophets both ancient and modern. Life is challenging but there are answers. Priesthood blessings also give comfort in times of need.
