Hi I'm Jack

I'm from Seattle, I'm a skier, I'm a lacrosse player, I'm an adventurer, and I'm a Mormon.

About Me

I am a student at Brigham Young University, where I play on the lacrosse team. Although I go to school in Utah for much of the year, home for me is in the Pacific Northwest, in rainy Washington state. I love to ski, fly fish, hike, find new things to do, explore, road trip, and of course, I love to play and coach lacrosse and many other sports.

Why I am a Mormon

I am a Mormon because of the happiness the church brings to my life, along with the clear and righteous path that the church teaches. I have grown up Mormon all of my life. My parents and relatives are all Mormon, so because of this I have seen tons of great examples that I try to emulate. I see how awesome, cool, and happy the church makes the people I know, and I want to have that same happiness in my own life. Although all of my family are members of the church, where I am from, the word Mormon is a bit taboo and strange to many. There were very few Mormons in my town, even fewer at my schools, and because of this the church made me seem different, and a little strange to many who did not understand. Although this led to occasion ridicule, most others noticed the difference in the way I lived my life compared to the majority of other youth. Although I am far from perfect, many respected and even admired me for standing up for what I believe in, when the world teaches us the opposite. I saw the difference and effect that this church had in my own life and the lives of my loved ones compared to those who had no religion or the gospel. The difference was dramatic. The church and Jesus Christ comforts me at all times whenever I am in need, and having that difference in my life is why I choose to be a Mormon. It has not been easy for me being different than the majority, but the difference that the church makes in my life, makes all of it worth it.

How I live my faith

Back home I live my faith by trying to be an example to others. Not many know what a "Mormon" is where I am from, and therefore I am what they think of when they think of the church. I try to be a good example of Christ to my friends and I hope the difference I make in their lives can have lasting positive impacts. Here at Brigham Young University the situation is a bit different. Most of the people at my school are Mormons, which means I find a way to live my faith in a different way. I teach Sunday School for the men at my church on Sundays. We often have discussions about Christ, scriptures, and the teachings of the prophets of old and the latter day prophets that we as Mormons believe receive guidance from God.

What blessings can we receive through the gift of the Holy Ghost?

Jack
The gift of the Holy Ghost acts as a guide in our day to day lives. Whenever one is in a situation that may seem difficult, confusing, or uncomfortable, the Holy Ghost is that voice and feeling that prompts and guides you to make the right choice. This choice may not seem like the most obvious at the time, but because it is coming from the Holy Ghost, a divine assistant to God, the choice that the Holy Ghost prompts is the best for our eternal perspective. The promptings and guidance that the Holy Ghost provides to us can come in many ways. Some people may here a guiding voice, similar to what many might call one's conscience or their "Jiminy Cricket", that subtly warns us of danger or helps us make a decision. Other times the Holy Ghost will help guide us in simpler ways such as a feeling of warmth or comfort, or maybe even a sinking feeling if the Holy Ghost is telling you something is wrong. However the Holy Ghost chooses to guide us, the Holy Ghost is a blessing in our life because it can bring us comfort and guidance in our day to day lives. Show more Show less

What blessings can you receive from reading the Book of Mormon, the Bible, and other scriptures?

Jack
When someone reads the scriptures, such as the Bible or Book of Mormon, it helps them to develop a close relationship with God and his teachings. This closer relationship with God, who we believe is our literal Heavenly Father, helps brings comfort to our lives in times of hardship and times of happiness. Not only this, but the scriptures provide answers to many of the great questions that might come up in one's life. When one needs guidance on a decision they are making, reading the scriptures can be a great way to find an answer inspired of God.These are answers that we can trust too! Because the scriptures are all based off of the teachings of prophets and disciples of God and Christ, everything they have written down, and everything we read, as long as it has been translated correctly from the text's original language, is inspired by God.
