Hi I'm Juana

I was born in Laredo, Texas. I am the 5th of seven children. I am Mexican American and I am a Mormon.

About Me

We moved to San Antonio from Laredo, Texas, when I was about two years old. My family and I were migrant workers, working for several years on farms in Texas where we picked cotton; in Ohio where we picked cucumbers, tomatoes, and potatoes; in Michigan where we picked cherries and in Wyoming where we picked sugar beets. When we earned enough money to purchase a home we stopped going to the fields. After my mother passed away my father sold the home that we had purchased with the money we had earned by working as migrant workers, and distbuted the money among my siblings and me. We were raised to be self sufficient. I was raised a Catholic but later I joined the Baptist Chruch. I was married in 1959 and some time later moved to Finland where we met some Mormons and joined the Church. The Ambassador in Helsinke was also a Mormon. The man that baptised us had done a mission in Finland 20 years before. Since joining the church I have being working on my genealogy and have discovered that my ancestors were Jews that expelled from Spain and came to Linares, Nuevo Leon, Mexico. They came from the State of Leon in Spain. When they were expelled they had to change their religion and customs and their names from Jewish to Spanish names. They had to choose to do so or burn at the stake. What a choice!

Why I am a Mormon

I am a Mormon because when I contacted the missionaries to give the discussions to my daughter, I listened while they explained about the church. They used certain words such as power and authority. When I heard those words, I remembered hearing those same words before. Six years before I had attended a revival in the Baptist Church and the topic was the latter days. The professor who was leading the revival explained that in the latter days there was going to an elite group that would have would have the authority, and the power to established God's kingdom on the earth. The professor explained that the Savior who is our King had to have a kingdom. At the time the professor didn't know who these people were. So when the missionaries used those words, I remembered them. I not only gave my daughter permission to join but I told my husband, "Guess what. I found that elite group." My husband, another daughter, and I also joined the church. I have been a Primary Teacher; have been in the Presidency of the Primary; Secretary in the Stake Relief Society; in the Presidency of the Relief Society; Compassonate Service Leader, worked in the Young Womens program; have done Spanish translations, and was both a Ward and Stake Missionary. I am currently a Genealogy Consultant. My husband and I are Temple Ordinance Workers and are presently serving as Missionaries working in the Pornography Addiction Recovery Program. We also served a mission in Guatemala.

How I live my faith

I was a stay-at-home mom and raised three great daughters. When I felt that the time was right, I went back to school. While getting my degree in Bilingual education I discovered Art and took private art lesson. I just wanted to decorate my home. When I hung my paintings in my home, friends and neighbors liked them so I sold some paintings. Later I had my small art gallary. Several years ago I had an art exhibit. While raising my daughters, I made up childrens stories for them. I continued to write children's stories. Last year I combined my two loves of writing children's stories and art. I published and illustratred a childrens' book and am presently working on a second one and hope it will soon be completed. After that, who knows. When my first daughter was borned my husband bought me a sewing machine and I started making clothes for my daughters and myself and enjoyed it very much. When we were adviced to grow a garden I embraced the idea and every year I grow a garden in pots. Because of the drought in this area I am not having much luck, but each year I try. I live my faith by being faithful to the advice we are given, knowing that it comes through the inspiration of our Heavenly Father.
