Hi I'm Derek Taylor

I'm married to Cathy. We homeschool our eight children. I live and work in the San Francisco Bay Area. I'm a Mormon.

About Me

I work in the high-tech industry as both a hardware (chip) designer and software developer. I've worked at three startup companies in my career. I was a co-founder of the last one. We sold to Oracle, and that's where I work now. I spend much of my time with my wife Cathy and our eight children. We homeschool them so that we can fulfill our God-given responsibility to direct the upbringing of our children. We are challenged every day by it. We are amazed at how homeschooling brings our family closer together. I'm also a Varsity Scout Coach in the Saratoga, California area. We have a super team. We've planned some fantastic high adventures, from white water rafting, to cave exploring, to mountain biking, and backpacking in Yosemite or in Ansel Adams. I love how the Boy Scouts helps boys grow into men. It helped me as a boy. As a leader, I now see how it's helping the next generation. I served a Mormon mission to Johannesburg, South Africa from August '93 to August '95. I love the people of South Africa and I'm so grateful for the chance I had to serve there.

Why I am a Mormon

My parents and grandparents were active Mormons. I was baptized by my father at the age of eight. I was converted to Christ while in high school by reading the Book of Mormon. The Book of Mormon taught me how to see the love of God in everything that happens in my life and in the world. I came to see that the greatest of all God's gifts is His Son, Jesus Christ.

How I live my faith

The Bible and the Book of Mormon together have taught me to find joy in life through service. The greatest blessing of the Church is the many opportunities it gives me to serve others. By participating in the church activities and ordinances, I'm amazed at how much I've changed. I feel the light of Christ growing brighter within me. I feel God is pleased with these changes, and that is the greatest joy of all.
