Hi I'm Alan

I love gardening and helping others to garden. I consult for businesses trying to improve their quality systems. I'm a Mormon.

About Me

I am a grandfather and have a loving and faithful wife. We have four children and 13 grandchildren. All of our children are active in the church and we love to be with each of them and their families. Up until the downfall of the economy, I was self employed doing consulting work helping businesses to improve their quality management systems. But now I am self-unemployed. But this has allowed me and my wife to be on three different welfare-service missions for the church to help people be more self-reliant in a gospel centered way. I love to grow vegetables in the raised beds we have in our back yard. I made the mistake of giving a gardening class three years ago and now I am supposed to be the expert in our neighborhood and in our local church area. In addition, we went on a gardening mission last year for the church on the Hopi Indian Reservation. That was such a great experience! I plan to continue our missionary experiences and hopefully have successful gardens. But, better yet to have successful family relationships.

Why I am a Mormon

When I read the first verse in the Book of Mormon, I knew it was scripture just as the Bible provides us the word of God. I was baptized and have been involved with the Church ever since (now 41 years). Trying to balance work, family, and church activities has been a challenge but satisfying. It has been interesting to live the gospel under sometimes difficult circumstances especially being a quality manager for manufacturing firms. But, you find out that adhering to the truths of the gospel have the best consequences. In time, those around you will know what you stand for and will even help you out. Some will count on you to stand-up for things that they are not confident in defending. Having a testimony of Jesus Christ, the prophets, and the scriptures gives me the strength to be an example and be obedient to the commandments and thus make progress toward returning to live with Heavenly Father with my family.

How I live my faith

I have had many different teaching and leadership callings in the church. Up until recently, my wife and I were the Preparedness Specialists in our ward where we taught our ward members about emergency preparedness, food and water storage, finances, solar oven cooking, and gardening (and thus be more self-reliant). We also are/were serving welfare-service missions at the same time. We also try to be good neighbors and also visit a few women who live in a nearby senior living center. My wife and I have also served as precinct committee representatives. It is a great feeling to have the strength and energy to love and serve others because the Lord blesses you to do so.
