Hi I'm Gary

I grew up in Southern California, converted to the LDS faith in 1969, and have never regretted my decision to do so.

About Me

I am the third oldest of four children. I grew up in Southern California and spent much of my youth while not in school at the beach, working on cars and racing go-karts. I joined the U.S. Army and, while preparing to deploy to Vietnam, converted to the Church. I married my high school sweetheart. We have since raised six children and now have 25 grandchildren. I earned an Associate’s degree in Criminal Justice from Santa Ana College, a Bachelor’s degree in Psychology from the University of Washington, and a Master’s degree in Mental Health Counseling from City University of Seattle. I retired from a 32 year career in law enforcement; have also had a private counseling, consultation and training practice since 1996 specializing in relationship issues, violence prevention, recovery from trauma, and critical incident stress management; I am an associate faculty member of City University of Seattle (now teaching online courses only); and, I have been involved in motorsports for most of my life as a race car driver, team owner, race team crew member, and as a race track official. My free time is spent with family or reading. My wife and I recently completed a 2-year full-time senior couple mission in the CA Oakland-San Francisco Mission, and are now about to serve a second full-time mission for the Church.

Why I am a Mormon

There is nothing that brings greater joy in my life than our (mine and each member of my family’s) membership in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints – wherein you will find the gospel restored in its fullness. The teachings of the Church have increased my faith in Jesus Christ, provided knowledge of God’s plan for me personally, and simply make me a much better person than I would be otherwise. The commandments keep me safe. I love knowing that God is the same as in olden times and continues to speak today through a living prophet. I am able to see His hand in my life on a daily basis. I would not be who I am or where I am today were it not for this great blessing! I have learned for myself, as I have seriously studied the Book of Mormon along with the Bible, prayed, and applied the teachings of Jesus Christ in my life, of the truthfulness of what I am declaring.

How I live my faith

Living my faith is the essence of not only following Christ's teachings, but trying to become more like him. It is living my life in a way that reflects how Christ would live it were He here in my shoes. Service is also a huge part! I enjoy planned service projects as well as looking for daily opportunities to help other people. I also serve in various ecclesiastical positions I am called to within the Church. I cannot comprehend living any other way!
