Hi I'm Chuck

I'm a Mormon. I own three men's hair salons and I love to fly fish and golf.

About Me

I am a Dad and Grandfather of eight. My wife Joan and are now empty nesters with four beautiful children that have all married well. I have a passion for fly fishing, golf and basket ball. I try to golf once a week and have been fly fishing at Lee's Ferry on the Colorado River in Arizona and the San Juan River in New Mexico recently. I try to stay in shape by playing basket ball in the early hours of the morning two or three times a week. My wife is a full time music teacher at a charter school.

Why I am a Mormon

I am a life time member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latterday Saints. I find great joy in trying to live a Christ centered life. I attend church weekly and read the scriptures almost daily. It is common for young 19 year old members to serve a two year mission for the church. I knew I did not want to go on a mission unless I was sure that this church was of God. To obtain an answer to this question I started reading the Book of Mormon and praying in earnest. I was reading the Book of Mormon late one night when the lord spoke to me in my heart. I had an overwhelming feeling that this book of scripture was true. I could not deny the overpowering feeling that this book of scripture was given to us as a way for us to better understand the Savior and what we can do to serve him. All I could do was get on my knees and thank God for this powerful witness. To keep the same feeling I got back in bed and kept reading the Book of Mormon and the feeling and experience was repeated. Because of this experience I decided to serve a mission and was called to go to the London England mission. Bearing my testimony to the truthfullness of the restored gospel was one of the choicest experiences of my life. After serving a mission I returned home to my family where I attended univeristy in Utah and Arizona. I met and married a beautiful girl from my home town of Calgary, Alberta. Joan and I are happily married and were sealed for time and all eternity in the Cardston temple. Since marriage we have lived in Calgary, Dallas, Boston and now in Mesa AZ. I love being a husband and father. Our four children are happy and strong in their faith of Christ. Through following the great example of their mother each of our children are hard working and successful. I can't thank the Lord enough for his blessings in our lives. I know the Book of Mormon is the word of God. Studying it has blessed our family; may it bless yours as well. Chuck Matheny

How I live my faith

I have always participated in serving others in the church. I have been a scout master, a teacher of youth and adults, a cook at girls camp, and a missionary. I visit about five families in our community each month as an assigned home teacher. The best times for me in this service have been when lives and hearts have been touched by the sweet feeling of the spirit of God. There is nothing else like it. Somehow the Lord let's us know that he cares about us and really knows us. I remember as if it were yesterday when my youngest daughter Kim was heading back to University she asked me for a fathers blessing. I placed my hands on her head and by the power of the Priestood of God I prounced a blessing of health and strength and protection upon her. The spirit of God was present and I know that this blessing will come to pass. We hugged and shed a few tears. This is the essence of the Gospel of Jesus Christ.

Do Mormons worship Joseph Smith?

Chuck
We do not worship Joseph Smith. He was a young boy when he had an amazing experience of meeting God and Christ in answer to his sincere and humble prayer. He learned as we all do to be faithful and obey the commands of God. Eventually he earned enough trust and respect from the Lord to be allowed to translate the ancient records entrusted to him. We now have this record in the Book of Mormon. It is a powerful witness of the reality and divinity of Christ. We respect and love Joseph Smith as the first prophet in these latter days. He left behind a great legacy of faith and obedience that we all can learn from. Show more Show less
