Hi I'm John, my nickname is Jack

I am an optometrist. I enjoy helping people see better. I am a Mormon.

About Me

I am an optometrist. Before I went to optometry school, I was on the faculty of a college of osteopathic medicine. As an optometrist, I can apply the basic science knowledge I learned to help people see better. Helping people see better gives me great joy. I enjoy woodworking, and I have made several pieces of furniture for our home. I have learned through woodworking that experience is a wonderful teacher I am trying to learn how to play the piano. I would place myself somewhere between a beginner and an intermediate level as a pianist. I enjoy learning to play it, and I also learning music theory. It is like a new language. I have been married to a wonderful lady for more than 50 years. We have three children, nine grandchildren and two great grandchildren.

Why I am a Mormon

Both of my parents were born in the Church. As a teenager, I stray somewhat from the teachings of the Church, but I always felt that the Church taught correct principles. I went through a period of comparing the Church teachings with those of other churches, and I realized that the Church of Jesus Christ taught principles that harmonized with my own beliefs. I am grateful for the Gospel, which is the good news that Heavenly Father and His Son, Jesus Christ provided a plan that allows to to dwell in mortality and exercise our agency righteously, enabling us to prove our worthiness to gain eternal life. I am grateful that through the atonement that our Savior provided, we can overcome sin and death. All we have to do is follow His teachings. The scriptures provide a record of a lawyer who asked the Savior, Jesus Christ, what the greatest commandment was. Jesus told him that the greatest commandment was to love the Lord with all our heart, mind and strength. The second commandment was to love our neighbors as ourselves. Then He made a profound statement: "On these two hang all the law and the prophets." I hope to become more like the Savior by developing the ability to love the Lord with all my heart, mind and strenght and my neighbors as myself.

How I live my faith

I am currently called to teach the Gospel Principles class in my ward. This is, at times, a challenging calling, but it is also rewarding. As I participate with others in the class my own faith and knowledge are increased. I have had the opportunity of observing others gain greater faith and knowledge and come closer to the Lord in this calling. I am also a home teacher. This provides many opportunities of service. I believe that through service, we can become a little more like the Lord. I believe it is impossible to serve with sincerity and not learn to love those we serve. I believe this is how we get more out of our service than we give
