Hi I'm Gerrit.

I am married with five children. My favorite sport is hockey. I work in a university library, and I'm Mormon.

About Me

My sweetheart and I go see musicals, watch movies, read novels, and sit on our sofa and talk about life, our children, work, school, religion, faith, and everything. She is my best friend. I spend time with my kids reading books, watching movies, rolling/kicking/hitting balls, and eating fun snacks. I have been known to dress up like a pirate, Jedi, or policeman. We love dodge ball in the basement. I take them out for ice cream and the park when it is my time with each of them individually. For employment I am an academic librarian. A typical day finds me in several meetings and answering emails all directed at improving our service to the campus community and the greater national and international library community. I read books for fun, watch college sports, feel guilty about not getting enough exercise, and get nostalgic about the past. I love Henry Weinhard's Root Beer.

Why I am a Mormon

I grew up Mormon. My dad was a widower but he always brought us to church on Sundays. As I got older, I began asking questions but I wasn't too concerned about religion. When I was a teen I went to the LDS early-morning seminary classes. As a sophomore, we studied the Book of Mormon and I accepted the challenge to read it through during the school year. Up until that time I had read the Book of Mormon only in short bursts since my comprehension was never very high. I finished reading the Book of Mormon sometime in early spring. It was still cold and wet in my Northern California town. I followed the promise of the last Book of Mormon prophet, Moroni, where he challenges each reader to ask God if the book is true. I found out for myself that the book is truly the word of God. Since that first experience I have had many more which have reinforced my faith that this LDS work is inspired of God. I have grown to love our Savior Jesus Christ, and to appreciate his Atonement on our behalf. I have learned that families are eternal and I look forward to being with my wife and children forever.

How I live my faith

In my home, I study the Bible and the Book of Mormon individually as well as with my wife and children. I love spending time formally and informally to talk about Jesus Christ and his Atonement with my wife and children. Outside of my home, I have the opportunity in my local congregation to speak with many of my neighbors about our faith. I frequently knock on doors and invite others to learn more about our church. I share my personal feelings with them about the The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, about Jesus Christ, and about the Book of Mormon. I love it. It is exciting to meet new people and to find opportunities to help them, anywhere from helping with their dishes to leaving a free copy of the Book of Mormon with them.
