Hi I'm Rick

I was born and raised in Austin, TX. I'm a professional geek. I'm a Mormon.

About Me

I'm the proud father of two small children; they drive me crazy, but I love them to death. When I'm not chasing them around or spending time with my wife I have what seems like 20 hobbies that I split my time around. I'm a lifelong music enthusiast, and play a little guitar and bass. I try to sing, but I'm tone-deaf so I try not to inflict that on others. I've played in several bands, mostly people from church just looking to have fun and entertain a few folks. I also have taken a real interest in building things with my hands in general, woodworking in specific. It's so satisfying to take a bunch of raw materials and see something interesting and useful come out of it. It's fun to be able to say, "I made that!"

Why I am a Mormon

While I was born into the church, I've had plenty of opportunities to leave it as well. I've found, though, that those times when I don't have the gospel first and foremost in my life are the times that just don't feel "right". Good things happen all the time, and bad things happen all the time, but my ability to have the right perspective to deal with both comes from my activity in the gospel of Jesus Christ. He builds me up and leads me (when I'm humble enough to let him do it) through the peaks and valleys and helps me make sense of the world around me. It doesn't happen all the time, but there have been specific times in my life where I have felt His direct influence guiding me, shaping me, and comforting me and making me into the person I am today. It hasn't always been fun, it definitely hasn't always been easy, but I'm amazingly happy with where I am today, and simply could not be here without the gospel.

How I live my faith

Within the church I've served in a number of different functions over the years. I've taught Sunday School, served in Priesthood leadership positions, and currently am in charge of keeping the membership and financial records for our congregation. There's always something new and exciting to learn, and just when you think you've got something down pat, they give you something else to do and learn.
