Hi I'm Will

I am an aspiring physicist. I love cooking and running. I'm a Mormon.

About Me

I am a graduate student in Los Angeles, and I study theoretical plasma physics. My work involves studying certain types of plasma waves that can be trapped in a "magnetic well". I have three years to do my dissertation research, and at this moment, I have no idea how I'm going to solve this problem. It keeps me busy though. I love the outdoors, especially running, and in the winter, skiing. I own a Subaru Forrester because my wife and I love to drive up to Tahoe in the winter. I love getting away from the city because it allows me to get away from all the noise and be able to simply think. I love cooking, and Top Chef is one of my favorite TV shows as a result. Shows like that have inspired me to learn how to break down a whole chicken, how to make risotto, crepes, and other delectable dishes. I'm always looking for a good recipe that I can try. I found a lentil, sausage, artichoke dish that is amazing. I also love eating at really nice restaurants. I also love music in all of its various forms, but especially jazz. When I first moved to Los Angeles, I found a local jazz club that I still go to from time to time. It's great because there's no cover charge most of the time, and you can just sit, order some drinks, and enjoy the music. And they have a live band every single night. If I could have another life, I think I would be a musician simply because its so satisfying to create something beautiful that can be shared.

Why I am a Mormon

At various points in my life, I have felt a very powerful connection with my Heavenly Father. From a young age, I can remember wanting to be good, to be clean. I wanted to be like the men whose stories are contained in the Bible. There stories often show great integrity, a willingness to stand up for and defend those that cannot stand up for themselves, and a willingness to do what is right even when it's hard. As I came to learn about the scriptures and the gospel taught in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, the ideas instilled a longing to try to be like Jesus Christ. I found that as I followed through with these desires, that I could feel God's love, and I felt a deep sense of peace and joy. At a certain point, I felt that I needed to read the Book of Mormon for myself. As I read this Book, I found answers to my questions. And, being a scientist, I found that the answers made sense not just in my heart, but in my head. The Book of Mormon taught me many of the doctrines taught in the Bible, but in a much simpler way that I could grasp. Ultimately, as I have prayed about the truths, I have felt God write the truths on my heart in such a way that I cannot help but declare that the Book of Mormon is the word of God.

How I live my faith

One of the recent things I was asked to do by local Church leaders was to help others in doing their Family History work. In doing this, my wife and I were able to meet with an elderly Hispanic woman. We helped her to do what is required so that she could go to one of the temples of this Church and there be sealed by the priesthood to her parents. It was a very humbling experience for me because I felt blessed with the love of God as I helped someone to do something that they otherwise would have been unable to do. What's more is that it was such a simple thing for me to do, and all it required was for me to set aside some time. I feel that this is really what Jesus Christ wants us to do for each other: simply make time to do things that can help and uplift one another. They don't have to be great things in the sense of requiring a ton of time or energy, but that doesn't mean that they won't be great to the person that we did them for. The woman that we served was very grateful to my wife and me, and we have been blessed with a love for her. This is what is so amazing about trying to be a disciple of Jesus Christ. It causes me to feel closer to the people around me, and to realize that everyone matters to God.
