Hi I'm Dave

I am a Patent Attorney and an Electrical Engineer. I am a boy scout leader, a beekeeper, a gardener and a father, I'm a Mormon.

About Me

Each day at work, I learn the details about recent inventions of High Tech Companies and then I prepare patent applications on the inventions. Sometimes, I write letters to people who have copied inventions of others. Being a patent attorney is one of the funnest jobs you can imagine and I enjoy going to work each day. In recent years, I have worked on inventions that include the inside the Nintendo Wii, memory sticks, Fingerprint sensors for personal identification, new pocket knife designs and even new satellite T.V. systems During my weekends, I like to build things, garden and camp with the boy scouts. I have just finished building a horse shed. A few years ago, I built a chicken shed with my son and also a large tractor shed. Mostly, I do all these things with my children. I take my sons and daughters camping in the mountains. Since i have six daughters and two sons, I spend much more time hiking and camping with daughters. All our kids love the out of doors and can paddle a canoe, pitch a tent, build a fire outside and have fun in the woods. Since some of our children are now married, so I get to start doing these things with my grandchildren When we garden, we do so as a family, my kids helping to plant, pull weeds, pick the food and eat it. We grow much of our own food in the summer, then can it and eat it in the winter.

Why I am a Mormon

I was born into an active Mormon family. My father was a farmer the entire time I was growing up, which is how he made a living, and he was also a Bishop in the Mormon church much of the time. He and my mother taught me to always be honest, help other people, to work hard at every task I was given and to attend church on Sunday. We prayed each morning as a family before father would go to work at the farm and before the rest of us children would head off to school. We also prayed as a family each night. I learned early though a number of experiences while praying in the woods that God will listen and answer prayers. From these teachings, I learned to pray myself, study the scriptures and try to follow God. I received a number of blessing from my father, some of them when I was very sick. He would anoint me with oil, place his hands on my head and give me a blessing to be healed. On a few occasions, the sickness left me immediately and I felt much better. I have also given blessing to a number of people in which I anointed them with oil and prayed over them. I learned the most about God when I served as a missionary in Japan. The power of the Holy Ghost came into my soul on more than one occasion, cleansing my heart of past wrongs and bringing great joy into my soul. After my missionary time was over, I attended college and earned a degree in Electrical Engineer, then law, while also getting married and starting a family. At each step the way, God would guide my hand and bring greater blessings and joy as I followed him. I have felt the power of God and the Holy Ghost bringing me joy and truth many time in my life. That is why I am, and remain, a devout Mormon.

How I live my faith

I am a disciple of Jesus Christ. I spent hours each week studying the New Testament. At this time, I teach a Sunday School class in the New Testament to High School juniors and seniors. I am trying to get them to understand the life of Jesus and the teachings of Paul the apostle. I my life, I am striving to follow the instructions of Jesus to love God and to love my neighbor as myself. To do this, I try to show respect for each of God's children. I often help people to learn new things and to advance in their own knowledge and abilities to help others. For example, I am on the faculty of the University of Washington Law School where I have taught Patent Law each year for the last 15 years. I often teach advanced patent seminars to other patent attorneys. I try to help others learn the value of patents and how to prepare and obtain patents. I teach them to always do this with honor and integrity. The world is better off with honest lawyers and I teach my co-workers and students how to practice law with honesty and integrity. I read the Bible each day, both the Old and the New Testament. The reading helps to keep my feet on the path God would have me walk that day. I recently joined the Rotary club of Seattle. They are a great service organization and the donations I make to them help permits them to help many other people in all areas of life. I have been a scout master four different times. I use the time with the boy scouts to teach them to treat each other with kindness, to help their fellow scouts rather than make fun of them and tear them down. Of course, we go on many camping, hiking and canoeing trips. I strive each day to be a better person than I was the day before.
