Hi I'm Joe

I grew up in South Dakota. I have a wonderful wife and 4 kids. I'm a dental resident. I'm a Mormon.

About Me

My wife grew up in Denmark and we met in college. That was the best thing I got out of college by far. After graduation, I went to dental school in Maryland. Now I'm here in San Antonio doing a dental residency in periodontics (no that's not the name of a dinosaur). Basically I specialize in treating gum disease, doing implants and gum and bone grafts. I love watching football and playing and swimming with my 4 kids. They keep us running, but they're the joy of our lives.

Why I am a Mormon

I was raised as a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. Besides my brother, I was the only member of the church in my school. I always hoped and believed the gospel was true, but mostly i just trusted that my mom and dad really knew. They were my anchor growing up and kept me from making bad decisions. I owe them so much. When I left for college I was far away from my family. I started to really think and question what I grew up believing. I was planning on serving as a missionary for my church after finishing my freshman year at college. It occurred to me that If I was going to represent our church, I needed to be more certain that I truly knew for myself that this was God's church. I spent the year reading the Book of Mormon. Near the end of my first year, I re-read some of my favorite parts of that book and then really prayed to know if the Book of Mormon was true, but also to know if God was real and if he truly loved me. That night God told me, in a way that I can't totally explain, that the Book of Mormon is true and that Jesus Christ wasn't a fairy tale or a nice idea, but was my personal redeemer. I felt filled with light. It was one of the most incredible moments of my life and something I look back on when I'm having a hard day. I'm a Mormon because I know God has restored His church on the earth. The church gives me the opportunity to serve him and those around me. His gospel is the greatest blessing in my life.

How I live my faith

We have the wonderful opportunity to meet as a congregation every Sunday. To understand our church, it's useful to think of it as a large hospital. Except at this hospital the patients help take care of each other. I'm far from perfect, but as I strive to serve others, I grow closer to God. Right now I have been assigned 4 families to watch over. Another man from the congregation and I go out every month to check on them. We see how they're doing spiritually. We encourage them to pray as a family and to read from the scriptures together. If they need anything done around the house, we're also there to help. The other day a single elderly sister in our congregation needed help moving. We found out the night before and by 8:30 the next morning there were 7 people there helping her move. I've learned that life is so much happier when you try to live it for others instead of being so focused on making yourself happy.
