Hi I'm Korene

I grew up in Alaska. I like nature. I'm a Mormon.

About Me

I live in Washington State where I work as a reading teacher in a local elementary school, putting my degree in music history to good use. I never intended to be in education, but after serving a mission for the church in Venezuela I realized that teaching people was what I wanted to do. I like traveling to any sunny location, especially for visits with family. I spend the sunny days in summer outside kayaking, hiking, and playing with my dogs. In my spare time I cook, bake, read, and enjoy the holidays.

Why I am a Mormon

I was born to parents who were members of the church and grew up attending church regularly. When I was 14 years old my father was diagnosed with terminal cancer. It was at this time that I first decided that I needed to know for myself if what I had grown up hearing in the church was true. Through prayer I received my answer and committed from that time forward to live the gospel for the rest of my life. Since then I have had many more experiences and answers to prayers that have confirmed and strengthened my testimony that the doctrines taught in the church are true and from God. The teachings of the church help me to be a better person. There is a strong emphasis on living a Christlike life and using our time and energy to serve people around us. The church also teaches that education is another way to improve our lives and that we should study and actively pursue learning. Most importantly it helps me prioritize the things in my life and to focus on those things that will bring me lasting happiness.

How I live my faith

I start every day with prayer and scripture study to help me remember the covenants I have made at baptism to always remember the Savior, keep His commandments, and serve others. Each day I look for ways to be of service to the students and adults at work. I also look for ways to serve in church and my community. For example, along with other members of the church in my area, I participated in the Northwest Day of Service by cleaning weeds and brush from off city sidewalks and helping residents of my city with yard work. I have also volunteered in the summers to go camping with the young women of our area and prepare meals for them. And weekly I attend church and serve as a teacher for the 10 year old children. My goal for them is to help them learn about the mission of our Savior and develop a love for Him.

What is the Book of Mormon?

The Book of Mormon is a companion to the Bible. It is a record of a people who were lead out of Jerusalem and to the American continent. This record contains the writings of their prophets as they testified of Christ. In a time when many people debate the truth of the Bible, the Book of Mormon stands as another witness that Jesus is the Christ, that he is our Savior, and that he loves and guides his followers throughout the world.
