Hi I'm Laura

I work in a high school transliterating for Deaf and hard of hearing students, and I am a Mormon.

About Me

I am a wife and mother of two sons and one daughter who are all grown and married, and am a grandmother of three young boys and one soon to be born baby girl. I enjoy being with my family, walking, swimming/water aerobics, playing the piano and organ for church and tinker with tuning pianos. I work at school with Deaf and HH students in the classroom using SEE, (Signed Exact English) and PSE, (Pidgin Signed English) which are forms of sign language similar to ASL, (American Sign Language) although ASL has it's own grammatical rules. Patient members who are Deaf taught a group of us PSE. Shortly thereafter my services were needed when members then interpreting for the Deaf moved out of state. I jumped in the deep end, so to speak, and continue to learn every day using a mixture of signs to communicate with Deaf young adults in the high school and at church.

Why I am a Mormon

I was born into a family who embraced the gospel three generations prior to my birth for which I'm thankful. My own testimony has developed over the years beginning at a young age. I remember while sitting in our children's classes experiencing this sweet, reassuring feeling that the church was true and I was where I was supposed to be. I know that was the Spirit testifying to me, even as a child. As an adult I have grown to appreciate the blessings of the gospel as I recognize the safety it provides as I keep the commandments God has outlined. Instead of viewing them as limitations, I consider the commandments a road map to spiritual safety. I love my Heavenly Father and Savior. They love me and know me by name as with all who have come to this earth and desire all to return to them.

How I live my faith

In our ward/congregation I serve in an organization for the women where we meet together in the last hour on Sundays and at other times during the month. We teach a gospel lesson, develop sisterhood, learn new skills and serve one another as visiting teachers making sure needs are met spiritually, physically and temporally. Our goal is to strengthen and support one another as we try to improve our lives and live as Christ would have us to. Music is a big part of my life as well and I enjoy participating in the choir singing or accompanying the choir and congregation. Worship through sacred music is inspiring and invites the spirit in to my life.

What is the Book of Mormon?

Laura
The Book of Mormon is another special testament of Jesus Christ that supports and clarifies scripture in the Bible. Prophets have kept records and this is a collection of their writings named after one of the last of these ancient prophets named Mormon. This is where we get our nick name as Mormons. These prophets knew about Heavenly Father's plan of happiness for us and about the mission of Jesus Christ. They recorded in the book of 3 Nephi Christ's appearance, after His Resurrection, to the people in America where he taught them His gospel, and formed His Church among them. The Book of Mormon carries with it a special spirit as it testifies of Christ's teachings, His infinite Atonement, and His love for all His children. All who have a sincere desire to know of it's truth can receive that testimony for themselves through prayer and the witness of the Holy Ghost. This promise is found in Moroni 10:4. I know it is true scripture along with the Bible. Show more Show less
