Hi I'm Al

I was raised in San Diego, but moved to Utah. I stay in touch with my roots by making fish tacos for my friends. I'm a Mormon.

About Me

I'm a guy who has always had an uncommon passion for the natural creations of this earth. When I was in the fifth grade, my teacher asked us if anyone was interested in becoming a Junior Oceanographer at the Scripps Institute of Oceanography. At that time Jacques Cousteau was my hero. I raised my hand, noticed that one other student also raised his hand, we instantly became friends and my life was changed forever. Recently I also completed writing a book that took me many years to complete. I started playing the guitar when I was 9 years old and have always been moved by great music. It's great to see that my love for music and nature has rubbed off to some degree on my six children.

Why I am a Mormon

When I was 19, I was given a copy of the Book of Mormon. Once in a while before going to sleep at night, I would flip through its pages, looking at the pictures and skimming a verse here and there. Then one night a sense of urgency pumped through my veins. I realized that I was putting it off. I simply had to know if this book was true. I closed the book, knelt down and prayed. The answer I received from God was unlike anything I had ever experienced before in my life. I was immediately flooded with pure intelligence that illuminated my whole soul -- that spoke to the core of my consciousness. The answer was an unmistakable, tangible, resounding “yes!” I was completely astonished at how perfectly clear the answer was. The Holy Ghost revealed to me in stark reality that this book was of divine origin. One minute I didn’t know, the next minute I absolutely did. I knew it was true, and I knew it more certainly than anything else I had ever learned in any other way. Because this heavenly communication was discernibly real, was clearly not a self-generated emotional reaction but a manifestation from a marvelous power outside myself elicited by my faith in God, and filled me with indescribable joy -- I could never deny it. In fact, this pivotal moment was the most significant event in my life. From that moment forward, everything in my life almost miraculously changed for the better. The fruits of that single prayer have never ceased to be anything but amazing. Everything good that has ever happened to me since that day I attribute to my testimony of The Book of Mormon. My testimony is a precious gift from God, and my most valuable possession. It’s a perennial thrill to know what I know.

How I live my faith

My innate sensitivity toward truth has generated a strong desire to teach whatever I know. I graduated with a degree in Elementary Education, and have taught high school, junior high and elementary students. I have also been asked to teach gospel lessons in church for many years. There's nothing quite like the feeling of watching the eyes of someone light up as they catch on to something that resonates deep within them, and that brings new understanding regarding their purpose for being here on earth. At this time I am also serving for the second time in my life as a Cubmaster in the Boy Scouts of America. It's a thrill to associate with these young boys and their parents.
