Hi I'm Michael Jay Ashford

I'm a missionary, an Eagle Scout, a Texan, a music lover, a community leader and I'm a Mormon.

About Me

I'm 18 and a recent high school graduate. I have decided to serve a two year mission and have been called to serve the Lord in São Paulo Brazil. I'm very excited for the tremendous opportunity I have to teach those people and bring them to the true knowledge of the gospel. While in high school I was very active. I played Bass Trombone in marching and concert band, was a leader in my school's Science Olympiad team, an active participant in Boy Scouts of America, played sports, spent time with my family, and spent lots of time at church, including at early morning Seminary class, Sunday School, and youth group. I love spending time with my friends. Some of my favorite things to do is rock climb, swim, and go bowling with my friends. I also have a deep love of reading. I love books and the learning that comes through them. I also enjoy science and really want to study to become an Electrical Engineer. I have been accepted to Brigham Young University in Provo, Utah and intend to learn there after my mission. I have a goal of getting married in the temple and having a family.

Why I am a Mormon

I was born into the church. Both my parents were and still are active members of the church. I have been going to church my entire life and can't even imagine going to any church other than this one. I know this church is true because of the feelings I get from it. I read my scriptures and say my prayers every night I can and know that what I read is true. I feel deeply that there is no other completely true church on the Earth. The prophet and his apostles really do receive revelation. I know this for certain because the messages they share with our people directly apply to my life. We have a wonderful youth program that allowed me to become a better person. The standards and guidelines that I follow are for my own good. I'm happy that I don't ever even have to consider being tempted to do drugs or alcohol. I live a healthier lifestyle both physically and emotionally because of the values I follow. I know that this church was started by a young boy just searching for answers that were given to him and that there is no way that 14 year old boy with little to no education could have written a book like that and then convinced others to join it. It was through the power of God. I know my Savior lives and loves me and every single person on the Earth. Heavenly Father is always there to help you and he's done everything for your benefit. I hope to be able to spread the gospel more so that others can experience the truth of it also. I believe all of this with all my heart.

How I live my faith

I try to do everything I can to show who I am. I read my scriptures and say my prayers every night I can. To show my commitment and my love for the gospel, I have decided to serve a mission for the Lord. I don't swear and I try to keep my mind clean. I show an example to others and show that it is possible to not be the worlds view of a teenager. I stay away from tea, coffee, alcohol, cigarettes, and drugs and I exercise to keep myself healthy and strong. I try to be the best person I can be and to be a friend to everyone.

What is being a Mormon like?

Michael Jay Ashford
Being a Mormon is just like being from any other kind of denomination. We are normal people with normal hobbies just like you. We may go to church more and follow our religion with more conviction, but that's because we feel the difference the gospel of Jesus Christ has in our lives and want to apply it to be more joyful people. Some people say we're stricter than most religions, but the restrictions actually are freeing you from added temptations that you don't need or want in your life. You don't have to worry about doing bad things if you have committed to following the commandments we've been given. We are family oriented and love to be with our siblings as much as our friends. We love the teachings of our church and want to be able to spread our happiness to others. Show more Show less
