Hi I'm Bessie

I grew up in Idaho. I love to read, sew and crochet. I'm a mother, a grandmother and a great-grandmother. I'm a Mormon.

About Me

I was born in Utah and raised in Idaho. After marrying a Navy man, I've lived in New Mexico, California, Washington, South Carolina, Massachusetts, Georgia and Nebraska, some of them more than once. As we've moved around, I've learned to love all of the different kinds of scenery and climates. God definitely made this world for us to enjoy. I have been happily married to only one man for forty-five years. I am the mother of seven children and the grandmother of nineteen, soon to be twenty. I am also the great-grandmother of one so far. After high school, I got my practical nursing license and worked in a hospital for two years until we started our family. At that time, I chose to be a full time wife and mother. It has definitely been worth the effort. I love to sew and made many clothes for myself and my children beginning with baby clothes and continuing through prom dresses and wedding dresses. I also love to crochet and have made lace edging, doilies, flowers, afghans, doll clothes, etc. Reading is another hobby of mine and I enjoy the classics as well as science fiction and youth fantasy and a variety of other things, especially the holy scriptures.

Why I am a Mormon

I was born into a Mormon family and believed all that I was taught without question until my mother died when I was thirteen. Then I needed to find out for myself if God really loved me and if He listened to my prayers. I didn't feel the answer immediately, but as I studied the scriptures and prayed, I felt at peace and came to know that the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints is the true gospel of Jesus Christ. It was restored to the earth in its fulness in these latter days through Joseph Smith, who was the prophet of the restoration. I know that Joseph Smith saw God the Father and His Son Jesus Christ and was instructed by them as well as other heavenly messengers. He translated the Book of Mormon from an ancient record which was shown to him by one of those messengers. This he did through the gift and power of God. I know that the Book of Mormon is true and that it is another testament of Jesus Christ. The prophets in the Old Testament prophesied of Christ; the New Testament tells of his life and ministry among the Jews; and the Book of Mormon tells of other prophets who were members of the tribe of Joseph of the house of Israel who were led to what we now know as the American continent. They also prophesied of Christ and were told of signs to look for when He was born and when He was crucified. After His resurrection, He visited these people also and told them that they were the "other sheep" of whom He had spoken. He taught them His gospel and organized His church exactly as he had done among the Jews and healed them and blessed them. I know that the Bible and the Book of Mormon are the word of God. I know God loves me, and that He hears and answers my prayers. I know that Jesus Christ is at the head of His church and leads and guides us through a living prophet today. The current prophet is Thomas S. Monson. I know that families can be sealed together for eternity so that we can be with those we love most in God's kingdom.

How I live my faith

I love working at the Winter Quarters Temple in north Omaha twice a week. I feel the Spirit of God there and a wonderful sense of peace and joy as I serve His children and help them to receive the blessings He has offered them. I also serve as the librarian in our local congregation. I love helping in any capacity that I can. I have served in various ways in the past such as teaching the young children, the youth, the women, and directing music. They have all brought me joy as I serve the Lord by serving His children and I feel His love for me.
