Hi I'm Eric Johnson

I'm 44, happily married with three children, teach courses online and love travel and the outdoors. I'm a Mormon.

About Me

I grew up in Oregon and studied mathematics and computer science where I earned my in Math Education and an MBA. For the majority of my professional career I worked in the software industry doing support, training, business and methods analysis and localization management. Today I teach photography-related courses online and work from my home office. My wife and I have three great children, love to travel (especially to try new food!), take pictures, backpack, and anything that gets me outdoors, especially on the water. And if there are sandy beaches and sunshine involved, we're especially interested. Ok, and we're confirmed addicts of Disney World in Orlando. My kids like to ask us "Where's your favorite place to travel"? I can't answer that - I'm curious about just about anywhere. I was raised by great parents in the Catholic faith. I joined the church at age 22 (22 years ago!) after a lengthy investigation period.

Why I am a Mormon

Because I know it's true - it's that simple. But really, it's not - it's taken me many years of prayer and learning to understand what my Heavenly Father wants me to do and to be. Having been raised in another Christian faith I learned a lot about my Savior, Jesus Christ. Now that I know the restored gospel I have a strong testimony of the truthfulness of that and have that confirmed to me many times. While the gospel of Jesus Christ is relatively easy to grasp, it's not always easy to live. But, as I developed faith and tested it, I've learned for myself beyond a shadow of a doubt of it's truthfulness. A lot of how I learned this was through personal study but it's through sincere prayer and service to others that this confirmation has come to me. As we diligently search for the truth, God will reveal it to us - if we listen. It took me a while to learn that! God loves us and wants each of us to return to him.

How I live my faith

I love to teach and have had many opportunities to teach at all age levels. In addition to my professional teaching experience, presently I teach a morning Seminary course to juniors in high school. 17 students from two congrecations come to our class to study the Old Testament this year - and they come at 6:10am! I've taught all ages in the church. I've also had the opportunity to serve in various leadership capacities, including serving as a lay minister (bishop) overseeing a congregation of 400+ members which was a great, if very challenging and humbling, experience. I've also worked quite a bit with the Boy Scouts. Other ways I live my faith: I love to read the Scriptures, particularly the Old Testament and the Book of Mormon. I also love to attend the temple which I am fortunate to be able to do regularly since we have a temple close by. And, I do my best to live the teachings of the Church and be that person all the time. I don't always succeed, but I try. That means I don't do some things other people may do: I don't spend much time watching TV. Mormons have a Word of Wisdom which guides how we take care of our bodies and don't eat certain things (such as alcohol and tobacco) and I adhere to that. Sunday is the Sabbath and I do my best to keep what I do focused on that.
