Hi I'm JB

Husband, father, Scout leader, triathlete.... Mormon.

About Me

I grew up in the Denver area, moved to Provo Utah at the age of 17 to study at BYU, left school for 2 years to serve a church mission in Kentucky and returned to BYU afterwards to finish school. Following my studies at BYU I moved to North Carolina to attend graduate school at Wake Forest. Since graduate school I have lived in various places across the country from Colorado to Texas then on to Washington. I have a fantastic wife and am the father of 2 boys. I love spending time with my family, the outdoors, I regularly compete in triathlons and spend a great deal of time riding my bike.

Why I am a Mormon

I feel very fortunate to have been raised in the Mormon faith. My father was raised in the church and my mother joined the church while attending college. Whether raised in the church or not everyone at some point needs to come to their own realization of the truthfulness of the gospel. As a freshman in college I was seeking divine guidance through scripture study, personal prayer and fasting. I was seeking to know for myself that that Book of Mormon was true and that serving a full time 2-year mission was what the Lord wanted me to do. I wasn’t new to the church and I was completely active in the church from birth… yet I wanted a testimony and witness of my own. I received a powerful answer to my searching. I know from first hand experience that the Lord hears and answers my prayers and that through the power of the Holy Ghost I know the Mormon faith to be true.

How I live my faith

For me I feel the best way that I can live my faith is to strive to emulate the example of Jesus Christ. In order to follow the example of the Savior you must first come to know him… to know what he did and how he lived his life. I certainly do not feel that I know everything about the Savior and it’s my desire and responsibility to always be learning more of who he was, who he is, how he lived and how he would act in all situations. The starting point is to gain the knowledge and understanding … but that knowledge must be put into action. I know that I constantly fall short of his example yet the church teaches of love, repentance and the ability to be forgiven of our wrongdoings… the ability to move onward and upwards. So far I have skirted answering the question…. How I live my faith. The reason I have not directly addressed the question is that I don’t want it to appear as a checklist, which it most certainly will. The most important way to live your faith is to live in a way such that you are worthy and open to the constant promptings of the Holy Ghost…. Then let the Holy Ghost direct you in your day-to-day lives. In order to have the constant companionship of the Holy Ghost there are things that I try and do to have that ‘Heavenly direction’. A great and faithful leader in the scriptures taught his people that ‘when ye are in the service of your fellow beings ye are only in the service of your God.’ The way I live my faith is by trying to do as the Savior would do: love my wife, love my family, prioritize those things in my life which have eternal importance, attend weekly church meetings, serve others in the community, be honest, love my neighbors, voting for candidates that espouse similar values, volunteer in my children’s schools, volunteer with quality charitable organizations, daily prayer and scripture study, etc.
