Hi I'm Heather Hemingway

I grew up in Idaho. I am a writer and have been published in many newspapers and a magazine. I'm a Mormon.

About Me

I am a wife and mother of three. I attended Brigham Young University-Idaho as well as Brigham Young University-Utah where I studied journalism. I love to write and I love The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. I am learning to quilt and can jams:) I love music and have played the piano for over 20 years. I have taught piano lessons to both women and children. I currently serve on a public affairs counsel for the Church in the Houston area and I write the Mormon Voice blog for the Houston Chronicle.

Why I am a Mormon

Though I have been a member all my life, I never stop learning something new about the gospel. When I was 17, my family took a trip to Nauvoo. My family drove all the way from the Intermountain West to Nauvoo, Illinois. It was a long trip in a station wagon with my four siblings, but it was well worth it. In Nauvoo, we felt the most beautiful spirit there--it was like the people there had never left! I felt closer to him than I ever had and knew for myself that Joseph Smith was a prophet of God, sent to help restore Christ's Church upon the earth. I know that the Book of Mormon is a divine book. I know that Jesus is the Christ and that he lives! This church has truly blessed my life as it will bless yours.

How I live my faith

Right now I am serving as a leader in the Primary (children's organization) as well as serving on my stake's Public Affairs Council. Since I have a degree in journalism, I write articles for the Church as well as write a Mormon blog (http://blog.chron.com/mormonvoice/). My family enjoys our ward missionaries and we strive to have them over for dinner at least once a month. I also do visiting teaching with another sister (my companion) every month. Visiting teaching is a way to make sure all the women's needs are met and is the Lord's way to help us take care of each other. I have four sisters that I see once every month. As my companion and I do this, we feel the blessings of friendship and happiness for "tending the sheep" of the Lord. Additionally, I love to attend the temple and feel the beautiful spirit there. My goal is to go at least once a month if not more. This is a church where we strive to be Christ's disciples through our service to His children.

Why do you have 12 Apostles? They were just meant to be around for the time of Jesus Christ, not to be replaced with new apostles.

Who wrote the Book of Mormon?

Heather Hemingway
The Book of Mormon was translated by Joseph Smith, but had many ancient authors. Think of the Book of Mormon as a family history handed down from father to son or sometimes someone else in their family. It was written on gold plates until there was a whole room (cave) full! Mormon was the editor of the book--thus the name, The Book of Mormon-- because he spent his whole life compiling all the records into one book.Though he did not write all the histories, he put the most important stories in it. Any answer to any question can be found in the Book of Mormon. It is a special book--a companion to the Bible--that has brought great joy and peace to my life as it will to yours. Show more Show less
