Hi I'm Rachel

I grew up in Washington. I love music and languages and sports. I'm a Mother. I'm a Mormon.

About Me

I grew up in a large family with lots of music and books. I went to college, studied Linguistics, music, TESOL, and Russian. I taught English as a volunteer in Russia and returned later to study Russian. I also learned Spanish on my mission and I speak to my kids in Spanish everyday. My husband and I have four kids, the oldest being 6, and that takes most of my time. In my spare time, I go running, read, teach Piano lessons, and grow tomatoes (kind of :).

Why I am a Mormon

When I was living at home as a child, I always felt that God was real. I wanted to know, though. I wanted to feel certain that I was His child and that I had a purpose to my life. I remember kneeling down and praying in our laundry room one day (the only place I could find to be alone in our filled house), and pleading to know if God was real. I asked Him if He really existed and if He knew me personally and cared about me. I felt good after the prayer, but nothing spectacular. I just felt peace. Later in the day, I received a blessing in which an inspired man told me that the Lord knew me personally and loved me and would never leave me. He used the same wording I had used in my prayer earlier that day. I knew there was no way he could have known about my quiet prayer at home but that the Lord was answering my prayer. I felt a powerful sensation of warmth and love as the man blessed me and I felt that God was aware of me and that He wanted me to know that I was choosing correctly in following Him. Later in my life, I prayed about other things, about the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, about the Book of Mormon, and about serving a mission to share these gifts with others, etc. I recognized the Lord's answers because I knew what the Spirit felt like from His confirming my path earlier. I know that the Lord lives and loves me. I know His church is on the earth today and I love to be a part of it and serve Him. I know that the Book of Mormon is true. It has helped me change and it continues to help me grow close to my Savior. It is helping me raise my children to follow Christ and love Him as well. I love the gospel of Jesus Christ.

How I live my faith

I have been the music leader at church for the past few years. I have chosen the hymns for Sunday worship services and provided special musical numbers. I also have often played the organ, led the music when needed, and directed a church choir. I love to feel the unity of the choir members when we have presented in church because I can feel the love and effort each member has put into their singing. It is beautiful. Recently, I was asked to teach a class of young women, ages 16 to 18, which I am enjoying thoroughly. I learn so much as I prepare the lessons and as I listen to these beautiful girls. Another way I serve in the church is by visiting various ladies and their families once a month to make sure they are ok and to share a spiritual message with them. I have a wonderful companion and those we visit speak Spanish so I get to practice my language skills as we chat. If they need help with something like cleaning or yard work or they have someone really sick at home or whatever the special need they may have, we are there to help them out and also let other members know who can organize service projects. For example, my husband serves at church with the youth and they went over for an activity and cleaned up the yard for one of the ladies I visit. Her husband had just had a surgery so many people in our congregation were able to help out.
