Hi I'm Kirk

I'm a software developer. I'm a competition BBQ'er. I'm a Mormon.

About Me

I love software design and I write applications for Android phones. I also love BBQ. I started smoking meats a few years back and have recently gotten into participating in BBQ competitions. I recently built my own BBQ thermometer that lets me remotely check my meat temperatures from my android phone. If the temperatures get too hot or too cold an alarm will sound on my phone (waking me up if I'm asleep). Several years ago I started finding and trying all kinds of root beer's. I've probably tried over 200 brands. You lose track after so many. About 4 years ago I bought my own keg and CO2 tank so that I could make my own root beer. This isn't just your run of the mill root beer made from extract you buy at the store, oh no, I have my own secret recipe. Of course it's always fun to change things up and experiment with flavors to see what you get. I got married in 2004. Most of all I love my wife. We have a miniature long haired daschund who loves to chase lights.

Why I am a Mormon

I guess you could say I'm a Mormon because my parents were, but that's only a small piece of the puzzle. There is a time in everyone's life where they start making their own decisions. I was baptized at the age of eight, but the reason why I am still a Mormon has to do with my experiences with the Church and the things I've done to come to find out about the veracity of this Church. We believe in the Book of Mormon which is another testament to our Savior Jesus Christ. As I grew up, I would read through the book and at one point in my life I felt that it was time to stop relying on what my parents taught me. I needed to know for myself if the Church was true. In the Book of Mormon there is a promise. One of the Prophets gives us a promise that we can ask God with a sincere heart if the Book of Mormon is in fact another testament of Jesus Christ. I had to put it to the test. What did I have to lose? I know that the feelings I received as I prayed about the truthfulness of the book were from God. My heart was full and I just felt good. As time has passed those feelings have only grown. I know that the Church of Jesus Christ of Later Day Saints is indeed the same Church that Jesus organized when he walked the earth so many years ago. The Book of Mormon is true. If you have a true and sincere desire to know, I urge you to ask of God if it is true.

How I live my faith

The Mormon Church is a Church that focuses on service. As a member of the church I have been assigned a few families to visit each month. Another member and I visit with the families, offer help whenever we can and we make sure that their needs are met. I live in an area where people are moving in and out all the time. As members move in or out of the area some of the men get together to help the members load and unload their trucks. It's work, and sometimes it can be downright miserable from the Arizona heat, but I know that it's appreciated. I guess a good part of living my faith is about showing others that you care about them. The Savior taught us to love one another. I think service is the best way we can show others that we care.
