Hi I'm Shirley

I'm a Mormon. I grew up with parents who are deaf. I am a mom, a teacher, a wife, and I am a Mormon.

About Me

I grew up in Tucson in a very loving home. My mom was not of the LDS faith but my dad was raised a Mormon and because of their deafness some 80 years ago, they didn't have as much opportunity to know and understand their religions. Strange as it may seem, their deafness helped to define who I was as I learned to overcome my shyness and help them intergrate into the "hearing" world by being their interpreter. Mom joined the Mormon faith because it was Dad's religion and over time we started attending church. I learned what it meant to be a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints as I attended church, high school seminary, and then to fulfill my dream to attend Brigham Young University. There I studied elementary education and Communicative Disorders. I taught school for a few years, then fulfilled another dream of mine--to marry and start a family. I have five wonderful children and a wonderful husband who supports me in all my personal endeavors. I love serving God by serving others. I find great joy in teaching as a substitute teacher because my first love has been and always will be that of being a mother. I love to garden and in Peoria we can garden almost year round. I also love to do home canning and baking. Yes, I am living the dream of being a homemaker too.

Why I am a Mormon

I gained my personal testimony of the gospel of Jesus Christ while in high school. I read the Book of Mormon and I decided that I needed to know if it was true. So I took the challenge found in Moroni 10:3-5 and I prayed and asked God if the things I read in the Book of Mormon were true. I found out for myself by the power of the Holy Ghost that indeed the book was of God and then if that was true, I knew that the man, Joseph Smith, was also called of God. He was a true prophet called to restore God's church to the earth. As I have grown in my testimony of Jesus Christ, I have learned to rely on Him in all things. I have found the peace that so many people in the world search for because I know that Jesus Christ is my Savior and Redeemer and because of what He did for me, I will one day live as a resurrected being forever. My goal is to strive to be like Christ in word and deed. I want to serve others as Christ did. I want to share what I know and feel with others to help them know what I know.

How I live my faith

I love to work with the youth--young children, middle school children, and even high school age youth. I am a teacher at heart and presently my calling is to serve the high school age youth as their seminary teacher. That involves getting up each day by 4:30 AM and having prepared a 50 minute gospel related lesson the day before, I am hopefull that what I have prepared will awaken and arouse in these sleepy kids a desire to do what is right, to love the Lord, and to be committed to Jesus Christ. Sometimes it's a thankless job but there are glorious days when what I've prepared is joined by the Spirit and all are edified. Those days are special indeed but I know that what I am doing is making a difference in the lives of young people. I hope more than anything that these kids take with them the feelings that I have for Christ and that I love Him and I love them. There are days throughout the school year that I substitute teach in the school district and that is rewarding for me as well. I always try to give 100% each day and I try to be an example of someone who is happy with life and at peace.
