Hi I'm Cal Beard

I'm a Mormon. I was tracted out by a pair of missionaries in 1980, so I'm still a new convert.

About Me

I was geek before geek was cool. I love high tech, science, and logic. I do recreational mathematics. I have hobbies that include astronomy and AND, I'm a Renaissance Man. I am a talented digital artist, electronic musician, public speaker, educator, and philosopher.

Why I am a Mormon

I joined the LDS Church because it is logical. Nowhere else is there a concise, encompassing, and consistent doctrine. I used the Bible as a guide to find the Church that God established and guides. My wife and I studied the scriptures and made a list of important points that we expected to see in a Church. We made these into questions that we asked to various ministers and members of churches that we visited. 1. Is Baptism important? We thought that this was a innocuous question, but what about people that died before the time of Christ, or never heard the gospel. Baptism must not be important for them. 2. Is marriage temporary? We are encouraged to marry and raise a Christian household. We expect to be resurrected in the same bodily form as we are now. Why, then does everyone say, 'till death do us part"? 3. Why is the Bible not getting bigger? If the Bible is a history of God's dealings with man, why did that history stop? Did God stop dealing with man? 4. No more prophets? If the Bible is a guide for us to learn how God has guided man and most of the Bible describes the ministry of prophets, why are there no prophets today? 5. Authority from God. Why do we never hear anyone say, as in the Bible, "Thus saith the Lord." Does no one on Earth have any authority? A seminary gives authority from man. 6. Do you pray? If revelations and scriptures no longer come to Earth because of "the heavens are sealed", why does anyone pray? Do they not expect an answer? 7. Why are there no Temples today? Most of the Bible speaks of synagogues for public meetings and Temples for special services. Jesus instructs both to "go and preach to all the world" and yet "cast not pearls before swine", there must be two levels of worship, yet I do not see this in modern Churches. Needless to say, no one could answer any of our questions, until a couple of young men knocked on our door.

How I live my faith

Currently, I serve others by playing the piano in Primary [Sunday School] and leading the Boy Scouts. Since we have a living prophet guiding us, we are guided to the things that are good for us and warned to stay away from harmful things. We follow the guidelines of exercise and good food, while avoiding tobacco and alcohol.
