Hi I'm Chris Oyler

I am a wife, a mother, a grandmother. An author. I've been blessed with a great family. I live in a beautiful place. I'm a Mormon.

About Me

Hi I'm Chris and I'm so grateful every day to have the Restored Gospel of Jesus Christ in my life. I was baptized a member of this church when I was 8 and yet my testimony didn't really start to develop until I had life experiences where I had the chance to really learn about faith in Christ and get to know Him and my Heavenly Father's love for me. My husband and I have been married for 35 years, are happy and still going strong. We got sealed for eternity in the Los Angeles Temple. Coming from divorced parents, I think working hard at marriage is important and we will most likely be looking at our marriage as a work in progress for eternity. Speaking of eternity, we have a great eternal family. We have 4 sons, 3 daughter-in-laws, 2 grandsons and one grandchild on the way. When I was 30 years old our oldest son contracted HIV/AIDS and died, this was my biggest fear in life, to loose a child to death. Only through the tender mercies of the Lord and a loving and caring Heavenly Father was our family able to go through this experience and keep our faith strong. It was extremely hard, a great trial. It's been 25 years now and I see many blessings which have come because of this experience. Shortly after this happened I was able to write a book of our experience called, Go Toward The Light. I have always love journal keeping and this helped a lot in writing the book. It's hard to express how much I love this Gospel, value my family and am so thankful to be a mother.

Why I am a Mormon

I've been a Mormon all of my life, so when I started thinking about why I'm a Mormon, it's definitely by choice. I've had long enough to choose otherwise and I choose this. Because this Gospel of Jesus Christ brings so much joy to my life and meaning and knowledge of the purpose of life. It teaches me about a loving Heavenly Father, His son, Jesus Christ, The Holy Ghost and how they fit into my life. How they can help me in my life, every single day. How to listen to the promptings of the spirit to make good choices. Not only good, and better, but best choices in my life. My membership helps me to answer questions like, not only, what is the purpose of life on earth, but what is the purpose of my life on earth? What am I called to do here and what will I do after I leave here? Because of the experiences I have had with the death of my son I know that our family will be with him again after this life is over if we make good choices. I am not worried about where my son is. I look forward to being with him again one day. I find that I have an appreciation of the simple things in life: beauty of nature, seeing animals in the wilderness, a particularly colorful sunset or sunrise, love of Jesus Christ, an understanding and appreciation of the Atonement and Resurrection. I love my children, grateful for them and what I am constantly learning from them. They are smarter and more insightful than I am these days, aware of the world and how it works. My membership has given me a clearer understanding of sorrows, hardships, purpose of death and illness. It has also helped me to better understand service to others, ability to overcome difficulties and trials, faithfully enduring and hope of eternal happiness. There are so many things I love about being a Mormon. I love having a Prophet of God on earth to listen to and be guided by. 12 apostles to hear just like when Christ was on the earth, just like in the Bible. What a great blessing.

How I live my faith

I like to think of myself as a follower of Christ. I like to read my scriptures and study his life so that I can get to know Him and follow His example. I love what I know of His life and how it was a life of gentle love and service to others. Always teaching and giving, leading others to do the right things. Right now in the Church coming up is something called General Conference, which is held in Salt Lake City, Utah and is really for the entire world. It's held every 6 months, in the first weeks of Oct. and April. It used to be that you had to go to Utah to hear it in person, but now of course anyone can watch it on T.V. cable or online or at one of the LDS churches nearby via satellite. I always get so excited for Conference because it's a chance to hear a Prophet of God speak to us and give us guidance. Also to get guidance from some of the 12 Apostles of God. It's amazing just to see a modern day Apostle and feel their spirit. To think that we are blessed to live in a time when we have these men on the earth seems too good to be true. I love it. One thing I like to think about is that these men are not the Prophet and Apostles for the LDS church only, but everyone in the whole world. I have fond memories of watching conference with my husband and our sons on T.V. over at our shop, because we didn't have Cable at home. At church I have the opportunity to teach a small group of girls, ages 8-11 on Tues. nights about different topics having to do with self improvement and Gospel topics. This month we have been learning about the talents the Lord has blessed them with and how to exercise those talents. Last week we had a talent show and it was a lot of fun! I really love teaching these girls.
