Hi I'm Anny

I'm a professor, an English language teacher, a lover of words, a newlywed -- and I'm a Mormon.

About Me

I've spent most of my life in school, as a student or a teacher. As a result, I suppose, I love books and learning -- ideas of all kinds are delicious to me. However, when I finished my Ph.D. last year, I was thankful this was a terminal degree! I currently teach in the teacher education department at a Catholic University. I appreciate the richness of other faith traditions and enjoy meditating in the gorgeous cathedral on campus. One of the delights of my life has been teaching English to immigrants from many nations and backgrounds. When I'm not working, I love music, reading, cooking, sewing, writing, and spending time with my family and my husband. Life is good.

Why I am a Mormon

The easy answer: I was raised in a very active Mormon family. The more complex answer: The more I learn and the more life experience I gain, the more I find myself drawn to the simple, but profound truth of the gospel of Jesus Christ. I have not found easy answers from my faith, but I have found an anchor that has kept me safe and at peace through good and bad times. The fundamental doctrines of the church resonate with my mind and my heart. In particular, my testimony is rooted in the Book of Mormon. I have read the book many times and it continues to amaze me and bless my life. The complexity and integrity of the text is remarkable. Most importantly, the central message of the Book of Mormon and the Bible -- that Jesus Christ is the Savior of the world and lives to bless us -- has been a bedrock of my faith. At all the crucial turning points, I have felt God's hand in my life. My membership in the church has provided me with countless opportunities to serve and be served in a community striving (albeit imperfectly) to follow Christ.

How I live my faith

In my congregation, I am currently serving as the leader of the youth group for girls, ages 12-18. The other leaders and I meet with the girls weekly for an activity and each Sunday for gospel instruction. It is a delight to interact with these amazing young women, to strengthen their faith and have my faith strengthened by them. In the past, I have worked in the children's organization, helped with music, taught Bible classes in Sunday School, and assisted in the women's organization. On a personal level, I pray and read the scriptures daily as well as praying and reading with my husband each day. This daily spiritual nourishment is very important to me.
