Hi I'm Dave

I'm an Automation Engineer, I am often on-call and I'm a Mormon.

About Me

When my sister who was visiting me from 2,500 miles away, asked me about my job and what I do, I responded that I am a factory automation engineer. She seemed more puzzled than before she asked the question. I told her "If a factory is like a space ship, my job is like Scotty from Star Trek". They ask me to make it go faster or run better, and I help the machines do it. The lights came on. With 24x7 operation I am frequently called in the middle of the night to trouble shoot some problem or another. As a father of 5 children, I also have experience troubleshooting problems that pop up. It's all about the fundamentals. If they are taken care of, the path forward seems more clear.

Why I am a Mormon

When I was a young teen, I had a teacher at church who was a nice man with a passion for the gospel. His wife, a lovely woman in her mid 20's was 8 months pregnant with a son. She had previously miscarried twice, and they were ecstatic about this child and all it's promise. There was a terrible car accident. There was an emergency surgery, but the injuries were so severe, the infant did not make it, but his mother survived. I watched this good teacher go through this ordeal with great faith. At the funeral, he spoke of seeing his son again in the next life. I realized for the first time he wasn't just teaching Bible stories. He was teaching truth. Although I had gone to church my whole life, I was just starting to learn about faith. I had many experiences that added to that, where I had direct prayers answered. I received strength in times of weakness and despair. I think the greatest thing I have found, being a member of the church, is that of hope. It has helped me to be hopeful. I see the bigger picture and where I fit in. I may not know how to troubleshoot all the problems in my life, but I know that Christ is there to help me through.

How I live my faith

I teach an early morning class to 25 high school students before school starts. This year we are studying the Old Testament. I am constantly amazed at the dedication of today's youth and their parents and grandparents to get them there every day. Imagine high school students getting up an hour and a half early on every school day to go to church! Some people despair at the thought of today's youth taking over where we leave off. But after spending time with them, I have great confidence. Because of my familiarity with computers with my job, I help out connecting up the chapels with the latest computer and networking equipment for record keeping and web casting so that, although our chapels are far from each other, we can send and receive communication to keep up organized and informed. The Bishop has assigned myself and a down syndrome man to some families at church to to give a monthly message and to look for ways we can help them. My partner is a blast to work with. He is excited for this responsibility and his enthusiasm can't help but rub off. He has great joy in the service he gives.
