Hi I'm Bennie

I'm a musician, a student, a United States Marine, and I'm a Mormon.

About Me

I enlisted in the reserves of the United States Marine Corps when I was 17 and left for boot camp ten days after graduating from high school. When I was 21 years old I was deployed to Djibouti, Africa on a humanitarian/peacekeeping deployment. Right before I left, I wrote my first two songs on the guitar. I had been playing guitar and piano on and off since I was 10, but never had the inspiration to write songs before then. From those first two, a fire was lit, and while I was deployed I wrote 10 more songs. Since returning, I've continued to write music, now on piano as well, and hope to compose music in the future. In the mean time, I have decided to earn my first undergraduate degree in English Linguistics from Arizona State University, and then to apply to Brigham Young University to study Law.

Why I am a Mormon

Even though I was raised as a member of this church, I never fully appreciated or accepted the things I was taught until I left home and found myself in a completely hostile and foreign world. Marine Corps basic training was a complete shock. I had no friends, no family, no possessions, no clothing other than my uniforms, nothing at all that was familiar to me. I had never felt more lost and alone than I did during this time. Then, Sunday came. I will never forget the feeling of stepping into the room in which the Latter-day Saint services were held. What I found there was absolute peace. Since that time I have felt that same peace in Latter-day Saint buildings, services, and homes all over the world. It has been so strong and so distinct at times that it has been almost tangible, a warm blanket wrapping me up and comforting me through the times I've needed it the most. I know that this feeling comes from the Spirit of the Lord, the comforter He promised He would send to us at His parting (John 14:26). It is through this Spirit that I have come to know for myself that Jesus Christ is our Savior and Redeemer, that the scriptures are true and contain His words, and that He lives and continues to reveal His will to us through prophets today. This knowledge gives me purpose, it sustains me. Jesus Christ is the way, the truth, and the light. His gospel is the only way to be truly happy, and to receive all that our Heavenly Father wants for us, both now and in the life to come.

How I live my faith

In the Bible we read that “faith without works is dead” (James 2:26). My faith is in our Lord, Jesus Christ. It is that He lives, and showed us the way to live. It’s because of my faith and the example of my Savior that I dedicate my life to service. Throughout my life I have looked for ways to help those around me. Sometimes it’s giving a few dollars to someone who asks, or stopping to give a ride to someone I pass. Other times it’s listening when someone needs to talk, or just sitting with someone when they need a friend. The Savior’s life shows that each individual person is immensely important, and so He just sits, listens, heals, teaches, and loves. As a disciple of Jesus Christ I do my best to follow this example of perfect love for all people. Now, at age 25, I have decided to give myself completely to my Savior and to serve a full-time mission for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. I have been called to serve in the West Virginia Charleston mission for two years.

What do Mormons believe about Jesus Christ? Do Mormons believe that Jesus Christ is the Son of God?

I answer this with an enthusiastic YES! We know not only that He WAS the Son of God, but that he IS the Son of God. He lives, and it is because of His atonement in the garden of Gethsemane, and His death and resurrection that we are able to overcome both physical and spiritual death. He invites all to come unto Him and to be baptized in His name and to follow Him. It is by living His teachings and following Him that true happiness is found in this life. Show more Show less
