Hi I'm Ellen

I'm a Mormon. I became a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints September 24, 1974

About Me

I was born and raised in the midwest. Because of that I love the four seasons. As a child I especially loved winter. We lived across the street from the village ice skating rink. I spent hours at the rink and often came home with toes that were nearly frostbitten. We lived far enough north that in the winter we often had glimpses of the northern lights. During the summer we loved to swim and because our village was small, we children would use half of it to play hide and seek. As an adult I have lived in New York State and Maryland. In New York I lived along the Hudson River in palacial estates that had been turned into private schools for handicapped children. Then in Suburban Maryland I changed course dramatically and worked for the federal government. I loved using my days off to visit the museums and monuments. I also enjoyed driving to the Eastern Shore of Maryland to Assateague Island to enjoy the waves and watch the wild ponies. My first love is reading, all kinds of books. I did not have the opportunity to attend college but I made up for some of that by reading. History is my favorite subject which fits nicely with my other favorite hobby of doing genealogy. Since I am now retired I spend a lot of time in the pool. I am turning into a pretty good water volleyball player. I am also a clown who loves to make people smile and laugh.

Why I am a Mormon

I became a Mormon because of the example set my a sister and brother-in-law. The gospel of Jesus Christ changed their lives. When I was taught about the gospel, many new ideas were presented to me. However, once I heard them it was as though I had always known them. I remember as a young child in a protestant Sunday School singing "Jesus Loves Me". The thought came into my mind that if He loved us then he wouldn't just have come to earth the one time and then left us alone. To my everlasting delight I now know that He lives and that He visited the earth along with our Father in Heaven to restore His church and that He continues to direct it. He knows and loves each of us. This is evident because of the atonement and crucifixion and resurrection. He will come again and will reign personally on the earth as the scriptures teach us. The Book of Mormon is a second witness of Jesus Christ and has changed my life and has brought me closer to the Savior. I encourage everyone to read it and find out for yourselves its truths.

How I live my faith

I am an active participant at church. On Sundays during our church service we renew our baptismal covenants by partaking of the Sacrament (communion). The remainder of the day is spent as families or individuals studying the scriptures, reading from good books, listening to uplifting music, writing to family and friends, doing family history research or visiting the ill or lonely. In the past I have taught childrens' classes and also adults in Sunday School. I now assist in seeing that every woman in our ward is visited or contacted each month. This way we become a close-knit family and can help in times of trials or trouble. I participate in the community as a trained Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) member. CERT is a community based arm of FEMA. In a huge emergency if the fire and police are overwhelmed, we are called in to assist. I live my faith by being honest in my dealings with my neighbors, by treating everyone with respect.

How can I know Mormonism is true?

When I decided to find out if Mormonism is true I made the commitment to accept the answer I received from God and then to act on that answer. Sometimes we are afraid of getting an answer because we may not like the answer. You must accept that God is a God of truth. He cannot lie. Therefore, if you SINCERELY want to know, read the Book of Mormon with an open mind, pray daily for guidance and live the commandments. It may take some time for you to receive an answer, but you WILL receive one. The Holy Ghost will let you know it is true and your life will be changed forever in ways you cannot even imagine.
